- "Hikari" took the role of "the echo" in the Sanyo Shinkansen at the time of (1975) in 1975, and one an hour coming and going stopped at our station at first. In addition, a lot of use of the U.S. forces base (Iwakuni airport) person concerned was anticipated, too. "An echo" to conclude in the Sanyo Shinkansen was set, and "Hikari" of our station stop was reduced from time schedule revision (1988) in March in 1988 by 2 coming and going a day and abolished all "Hikari" who stopped at our station in time schedule revision (1997) on November 29 in 1997, and it was the stop only for "the echo" in two to time schedule revision after it in the daytime per hour afterwards in one, morning and evening in later March, 2013.
- One descent morning than time schedule revision rose (2013) on March 16 in 2013, and two "Hikari rail stars" did 増停車, and, as for the "Hikari" stop to the station, it became such it for a train for 16 years for a fixed period. The station where "only an echo" stopped at in the Sanyo Shinkansen in this way became only Asa Station.
- It was the stop only for 1-2 an hour "echoes" same as before, but, except "Hikari rail star," "a wish" stopped under the influence of Geiyo earthquake of 2001 in temporariness. In addition, it stops at none including a special train since a startup in the Sanyo Shinkansen about "Mizuho" "cherry tree".

History
History
The Iwakuni district between Hiroshima - Tokuyama it was almost thought the need of the station setting because was located in the center, and had an industrial area in the coastal place [4]. In the case of the route choice about the construction of the Sanyo Shinkansen, two of a plan to add Shinkansen station to Iwakuni Station and the plan to install current Shin-Iwakuni Station were discussed mainly, but the plan to add it to Gantoku Line Nishi-Iwakuni Station existed [4].
The plan to add it to Nishi-Iwakuni Station was excluded from a problem by the route choice, and the points that disturbed from the need that it inserted an expected point, a curve of curve a radius of 2,500m in that the site purchase became difficult because a thing and the construction expense that the plan to add it to Iwakuni Station came to have a long track extension 3.5km passed a point, the city area that increased to a speedup were thought about [5]. In the case of this station new establishment, a point that passenger getting on and off decreased became the problem, but because it was the very large land where the fields opened, the site purchase performed it easily, and our station setting was decided in service in consideration of the point where the setting of the necessary maintenance of tracks base was possible [6].

Around station
The station square is established only in the west, and a new residential area exists around a station. There is few it, and the stores are deserted. As for this, the Shinkansen alone Sanyo Shinkansen station of Higashi-Hiroshima Station is the same as Gifu-Hashima Station of the Tokaido Shinkansen, too.
In the station east side, a mountain approaches across prefectural road Iwakuni Otake Line, Shogawa, and there is little level ground.
Because Sanyo Expressway Iwakuni IC and National highway No. 2 are near through prefectural road Shiniwakuni station line, prefectural road Iwakuni Otake Line about the traffic access, it is relatively good.
"Kintai-kyo Bridge" of the Japanese three people Bridge is near. For 12 minutes, a bottom is approximately one hour on foot by bus in a riverside. I am approximately 8km away from Iwakuni Station to the west.
