Fiber-distributed data interface (FDDI) is standard one to perform data transmission by LAN.

The double ring can open to 100km. The FDDI has maximum frame size bigger than ethernet of standard 100Mbps and can make throughput better.
When I design the FDDI network, plural FDDI rings usually make structure connected hierarchically. FDDI rings are connected with some apparatuses (there are many cases of a router and the concentrator) (they attach dual). The computer is connected to a router and a concentrator by a thing lure touch. The FDDI ring of the simplest structure an apparatus in the case of nothing. In general, an FDDI network is comprised of area of the computer room degree, but there is the example that the wide area FDDI such as the network in the city was realized.

Commercial service
Although the commercial examples which gave a service using the FDDI are few, telecommunications company exists.
Tokyo Telecommunication Network (TTNet, later パワードコム) affiliated with Tokyo Electric Power started the offer of the dedicated line service by the FDDI by the name of "the service for exclusive use of the FDDI" in Japan in 1998. But the contract for 2 lines was necessary, and a limit of the distance that could be connected from the limitation of the protocol called the FDDI added the standard contract that was severe ([1] painful in TTNet in a connection range as "same MA") to limitation having been big service in various ways to take the dual home (ring) constitution because it was single home constitution and did not spread for service too much by the price of the wide area ethernet service decreasing rapidly when I entered in the 2000s, and having lost price competitiveness. After パワードコム was merged by KDDI, service was provided by KDDI, but it is considered that the offer of the service was finished in about 2007 [2].
