Summary
It was Heijo that used the Kaji River which flowed through the northern part of the castle in an outside moat and surrounded it in an Old circle of the north and the south outworks of a castle around a main enclosure and was structure to post outermost outworks in the south side. The whole area except a part of the main enclosure and whole old circle, a part of the outworks of a castle are used as Self-Defense Forces garrison town, and stone wall and moat of the main enclosure south side, main enclosure front gate of the passage under a turret and the outworks of a castle corner oar of the doubleness oar exist now. There is reconstruction architecture of the third-floor oar and the double oar. It is the one and only in Niigata for the site of castle with the existence architecture. In addition, as for the stone wall, a stone wall of the front revolt heaping up is used only for the front gate side of the main enclosure, and it is thought that the others were lower wall of godown stone wall and Doi. However, it is said that a stone wall collapses, and I was changed to 切込接布積 by the restoration construction by a major earthquake of the Kanbun 9(1669) year [1].
The history, history
I it before modern times
I am missing at the time when a castle was built, but it is thought with construction of a castle by Mr. Shibata that is branching off of Moritsuna Sasaki that there were meritorious services in war for the Shogunate establishment early in the Kamakura era first. It became the castle of Mr. Shibata, but (Tensho era nine years), Shigeie Shibata caused a revolt for Kagekatsu Uesugi from generation to generation in 1581 (revolt of Shigeie Shibata). The Shibata Castle falls by (Tensho era 15 years), a picturesque scenery in 1587. Mr. Shibata was ruined.
With Aizu change seal of Uesugi, (Keicho era two years), Hidekatsu Mizoguchi obtain feudal tenure of 6 Mangoku afterwards in 1597; and is 入封 in Shibata. I chose the place of old castle of Shigeie Shibata as a base to rule the Shibata feudal clan in the territory and performed construction of a castle of the Shibata Castle. It is said to be the times of 3 代宣直 (Shoo era three years) at the time in 1654 that a castle became the complete form. I suffer big damage, but I am rebuilt to the building in the castle each time for (Kyoho four years) for (Kanbun eight years), 1,719 years for the next 1,668 years by a fire.
近現代
- I left only a front gate, outworks of a castle corner oar [2] and a stone wall, and, in the building of the inside of a castle, most of including the third floor oar were destroyed by an abandoned castle law promulgated from the Meiji government in (1873) in 1873, and a foot soldier 16th regiment of the army was put on the site of castle requisitioned by the Meiji government.
- The reconstruction of the castle is expected from inhabitants, and a plan of the reconstruction by the usual traditional technique designed a historical investigation as a document is pushed forward in the old photographs photographed in the Meiji beginning from late years, and the third floor oar and Tatsumi oar are restored in (2004) in 2004, and only Tatsumi oar has been opened to the public for many years from July of the year.
- I was chosen (2006) on April 6 in 2006 by Japanese 100 fine castle (the 31st).
Building
The outer wall of the oar had the meaning of measures to the snow of the winter season, too, and a wall covered with square tiles and jointed with raised plaster (sea cucumber wall [3]) was used. A clapboard was set in other walls and some passage under a turret.
- The third-floor oar
- There was not the castle tower and I put up a triple oar in the northwest corner of the main enclosure and called it "the third-floor oar". I declined in the Shogunate, and an official name did not assume a castle tower it, but the third-floor oar was a substantial castle tower in the Shibata Castle. I was destroyed by fire, and, as for the thing founded for (Shoo era three years) in 1654, the thing of the restored figure was rebuilt now for (Enpo era seven years) in 1679 in 1668 by a fire of (Kanbun eight years).
- According to the photograph photographed early in the Meiji era, there is a bay window serving as the stone-throwing spot with the gable in the first fold facing to the west and southern aspect on three folds of composition-type layered pagoda type the third floor with the oar (付櫓) sequel to, and the ridge of the third fold roof is made by a clove type, and three killer whales are picked up on the setting up the framework of a house. I was destroyed in (1874) in 1874.
- Main enclosure front gate
- The living passage under a turret which was rebuilt in 1732. I establish the lattice window on the second floor, and I take off a floor right above the gate, and it is a stone-throwing spot and structure to do. The important cultural property of the country.
- Old outworks of a castle corner oar
- Two folds of layered pagoda types the second-floor removing and rebuilding living double oar. The building after the big fire of 1668. It is removed and rebuilt to the trace of the main enclosure gun oar now. The important cultural property of the country.
- Main enclosure Tatsumi oar
- Two folds of layered pagoda types built southeast of the main enclosure the second-floor double oar. It was restored to the original state with wooden construction with the third-floor oar.
Local information
The army has been put until the military dismantling in Japan, and most of the castle traces become a garrison town (Shibata garrison town) of the Ground Self-Defense Force now. The thing which can see the inside of the building among the buildings in the castle by the relations is outworks of a castle corner oar, main enclosure front gate, Tatsumi oar. The inside of the third-floor oar in the site of the Self-Defense Forces is not shown.
Around Shibata Castle is maintained as Shibata ruins of a castle park and becomes the oasis. In addition, a bronze statue of first feudal lord, Hidekatsu Mizoguchi and a bronze statue of 堀部武庸 which is said to be it when I act as a great-grandchild of Hidekatsu Mizoguchi are built to the castle trace.

Ijimino Ochiyaya that was a coffee shop of the Mizoguchis is appointed in the natural beauty spot [4] of the country, cultural assets of Niigata.

I it under an alias
Because most of the castle ruins become Shibata garrison town of the Ground Self-Defense Force, I cannot go to the third-floor oar, and a sightseeing spot of the Shibata Castle becomes the trouble of making it it now. However, on the other hand, there are a great many people who express an impression saying "it is like the war-torn country Self-Defense Forces" to see the scene of the garrison town overlapping with a castle among tourists visiting here. It is the Shibata castle which murders you, and was called a castle floating Funaki, a castle discounted by a foxtail, but, as for the past, it increases in late years to be called by the nickname called the castle of the war-torn country Self-Defense Forces.
