Summary

"Hanako" of the Asian elephant was bred for a large animal for a long time until 2016. In addition, the pretty animal including the Japanese antelope and raccoon is bred. A lot of trees become the place of recreation and relaxation for local inhabitants. I come in contact with an animal like "the narrow path of the squirrel", and, "a guinea pig corner" and "a goat building," there are many facilities where I observe it close, and there is it.

I work on the dispersion breeding of the Tsushima lynx classified in endangered IA for the purpose of dangerous dispersion of the breeding lower population in cooperation with Ministry of the Environment from 2006 (I canceled an exhibition with poor physical condition, but reopen from February 22, 2008).

I am divided into the garden as much as it is in this garden and Inokashira, Mitaka-shi in Gotenyama, Musashino-shi. At this garden, mammals and birds are bred mainly, and a waterfowl is bred in the thing garden among the Inokashira Pond. In addition, "the museum" which is culture facilities is at this garden, and specially installed display or lecture are held. There was "the tropical bird greenhouse, too", but closes at June 2, 2013 for deterioration. "The aquatic thing hall" breeding fish and amphibians is in the share garden.

"Sculpture garden" is installed in the corner of this garden, and a work of famous sculptor Seibo Kitamura is displayed as an author of the Nagasaki peace prayer image. The peacefully commemorative image was produced in an atelier of the sculpture garden, and can appreciate the model.

In addition, the at one corner small amusement park (simple merry-go-round or coffee cup, bean train) of this garden is installed and is got close as a good amusement park for infants.

History until opening of the park

In September, 1905, Eiichi Shibusawa borrowed a corner (current natural culture garden book garden) of the Inokashira Gotenyama Crown lands from the Imperial Family and founded the Tokyo City orphanage influence department that accommodated a juvenile delinquent (のちの Inokashira school). On May 1, 1917, the whole Crown lands is granted by the Tokyo city, and Inokashira royal gift park is opened. On May 5, 1934, "the Nakanoshima small zoo" was opened at the position of the current share garden.

When Inokashira school moved in 1939, a plan to make a big zoo was pushed forward on this ground. "A big zoo" equal to Ueno Zoo was envisioned at first, but I was changed in a purpose called "nature habits observation garden" and opened it on May 17, 1942 without gathering large-scale animals without enough a budget and supplies because it was in the wartime.

Two giraffes were bred in opening of the park those days, but die with two of them by the end of the war.

Hanako

Hanako (April 28, 2006) of the Asian elephant

The female Asian elephant that Hanako was bred in Inokashira nature culture garden. For 1,947 years, it was born in Thailand. It is the elephant which visited Japan for the first time after a war. It was given Ueno Zoo in 1949 and inherited the name of elephant "Hanako" (Wan Li) starved during war. I went around the whole country and the Tokyo Tokyo metropolitan area by the plan called "a movement zoo" of Ueno Zoo which began in 1950, and Hanako visited the Inokashira nature culture garden for 3 consecutive years. An invitation campaign of Hanako happened in Musashino-shi and Mitaka-shi and moved into Inokashira nature culture garden from Ueno Zoo in 1954.

I stump the drunken who invaded the elephant building before opening of the park in 1956 to death and stump a member of male breeding to death more in 1960.

A tooth fell in the 1980s and became only one lower left. I maintained a body with the fluid food which ground a banana and an apple.

I updated the longevity record of the elephant bred in Japan in 2013 [4].

On May 26, 2016, I closed the life for 69 years.
