Summary

It is the story that small villagers of the Sachsen kingdom are troubled with about an effect to drink the decoction of the woodruff [¹]. On December 4, 1895, I was given the first public performance in Ann デア Vienna Theater [²]. At the time of the premiere, the Strauss second commanded only an overture by oneself, and the Adolf Muller second commanded three of the back [³]. Richard ホイベルガー went to visit this premiere with Brahms, too, and Brahms praised a well-made play and script [²]. In addition, about music of the Strauss second, Brahms comments on it as follows.

"

I want to compose it to say like that. Anyway, the orchestration of Strauss is great. As for it, the music had better old days (Strauss). But it is the thing which is excellent for the whole work [2].

Eduard Hanslick

It was, and it was performed 88 times publicly in the stage work of the latter period of the Strauss second by the most successful thing [³]. Music commentator Eduard Hanslick sends the following ardent praise.

"The くるまば grass" is a lot of pleasure from beginning to end. There are a former work, a place unlike "Baron Gypsy" "ジンプリチウス" "pass man" "apple Festival". The work in front was nearly a hair's breadth with the style of tragedy or the sentiment drama depending on at least scene.……As for "the くるまば grass," comedy characteristics of not only the point that makes the innocent middle class material but also the music come back to that familiar way of "the bat" which is effective most at a point maintained consistently in the operetta of Strauss [³]. — "Die Neue Freie Presse" paper, December 6 date

On the occasion of the premiere of this operetta, the Strauss second has quarrelled with popular comedian Alexander ジラルティ (German version) [⁴]. It was caused by the fact that ジラルティ was unwilling about appearance from the issue of family till the last [⁴]. ジラルティ was the important existence that was indispensable to operetta of the Strauss second [⁵], but, since "kalio fatty tuna of Vienna," he ceased to appear in the operetta of the Strauss second with this work last.

In an overture, a waltz played with a flute comes up [⁶]. This waltz is repeated in gorgeous counterpoint last, but is told that Brahms wrote in this counterpoint [⁶]. But it is thought that it is the created anecdote that is not a fact without an original score having only handwriting of the Strauss second [⁷], and the word "counterpoint by Brahms!" to be said to be it when in addition Brahms wrote in it with counterpoint being found according to the handwriting analysis [⁷].
