William Schering (William D. "Billy" Sherring, from September 18, 1878 to September 5, 1964) is a Canadian former track-and-field athlete. He is left for the record as a men marathon gold medalist of Athens Olympics (1906) [1].

Career
Schering is a world-famous marathon runner of the early 1900s. I came second in the Boston marathon of 1900 next to Jack coffee Lee of the same town. In addition, he overcomes "bay road go-around race" (en:Around the Bay Road Race) in Hamilton twice.
He was chosen as the Canadian representative of the Athens Olympics of 1906, but the means were poor [2].
Schering scraped up money somehow to raise the travel expenses to Athens. He bet the last money on a race horse named "Cicely" and was able to get the travel expenses luckily.
Schering arrived at Athens seven weeks before the Olympics and worked as a porter in a local railroad station.
By the marathon race of the public performance, Schering ran at the top in almost all courses, and won the championship at time of 6 for two hours 51 minutes 23 seconds [3]; [4]. The Greek ゲオルギオス prince accompanied Schering at last 50 meters.
A live lamb and a statue of goddess Athena were given Schering as a prize. After Schering returned in triumph to Canada, the Hamilton city gave it the prize money of 5,000 dollars, and the Toronto city gave it 400 dollars more.
After this triumphant return, Schering retired from active play soon and worked at the customs of Hamilton City until 1942.
After his death, "the bay road go-around race" was changed the name from to "Billy Sherring Memorial Road Race". The Hamilton city made "Billy Sherring Park" in commemoration of the achievement of this famous athlete.
