Sanjo-shi (さんじょうし) is the city which is almost located in the central part of Niigata.

Summary
Throughout the prefecture eminent manufacturing town. Most of the city limits consist of the municipalities of former Minamikanbara-gun and are classified in the Nakagoshi district of Niigata, but may be included in the Kaetsu district to be seen in later car number plates. In late years a name of "県央地域" is commonly used, and it is in adjacent Tsubame-shi and metropolis of the area consisting of Kamo-shi, Tagami-machi, Yahiko-mura.
Current Sanjo-shi started with former Sanjo-shi and Sakae-cho, Minamikanbara-gun, the new merger by 3 cities, towns and villages of county Shimoda-mura (2005) on May 1 in 2005. The population at the time of the merger counted approximately 108,000 and became the city that had Niigata-shi, Nagaoka-shi, population of the prefecture fourth place next to Joetsu-shi. The recent population changes between the fifth place from the prefecture fourth place with Shibata-shi having the scale.
Adjacent Tsubame-shi has prospered mainly on metalwork together, and relations of mutual supplement are close for a long time.
However, on the other hand, there was the side that had inveterate opposition and it was past and has had a debate over handling of the name about an Article 3 swallow interchange of Tsubame-Sanjo Station and Hokuriku Expressway of the Japanese National Railways (current East Japan Railway Co.) located in the border of both cities. In addition, although the movement that was going to realize "swallow Sanjo-shi" by both cities merger was seen, the financial world of both cities or the citizen's group developed for a debate in both both cities and did it, and, over merger of cities, towns and villages of the 2000s, they did not reach the realization after all.
Geography

- Sanjo-shi is classified in the Nakagoshi district in the division of the Meteorological Agency and the farm co-op, but a thing and the telephone book which an identification plate is not "Nagaoka", and are "Niigata" are "Kaetsu versions", and it is in some cases in 漸移地域 included in the Kaetsu district with Kamo-shi and Kamimachi, Koorida, Minamikanbara.

History of the ironmongery in Sanjo-shi
Seibei Otani of 出雲崎陣屋代官 which held the office invited the Kaji craftsman of the sum nail to the Article 3 castle from Edo to save a citizen of territory of prostrate Article 3, swallow area for storm and flood damage to take place almost every year in the early 17th century and recommended sum nail production as a side business of the farmers. This is a beginning of Article 3 Kaji.
The new manufacturing methods such as a saw, the hatchet were transmitted from the Aizu district in (origin of Kanbun) in 1661, and Kaji of Sanjomachi became still more prosperous. When it was the late 18th century by the kinds of the product having increased, the sending goods from neighboring districts hardware merchant who was as a commercial domain only in a hometown and neighboring villages began activity as the hardware peddler who stretched out a foot to the distant place in earnest so far. The ties of a hardware wholesale dealer and the blacksmith's became very strong and reduced the production of sum nails by the instruction of the wholesale dealer, and, early in the Meiji, a sickle, 銚, a knife, a kitchen knife, a saw played a key role [1].
