(ばん / はた, ) was the tool which I raised cloth as materials highly and assumed a mark and decoration and was used at a place of the Buddhism religious service.

It comes from the word putter car (patākā) of Sanskrit and is used because magnificence holds a service for Buddha and a Bodhisattva. In addition, according to "維摩経," I was considered to be a symbol of the evil-quelling, and I got happiness and prosperity by putting up 幡, and it was said to longevity and Land of Happiness death that I was connected.

The structure of 幡 consists of 幡頭, 幡身, Hatate, 幡足, and 幡頭 comprises a tongue with a triangle. It is old, and 幡身 was divided into 4 tsubos by a rectangle divided into the number tsubo, but there are the things of 1 tsubo, too. It is ranked lateral right and left 幡足 two or four Hatate by one downward. 幡 assumes the pieces of cloth such as brocade, the intricate design materials, but 幡 which I made using gilt bronze and paper, a board exists.

It is thought that it reached Japan with Buddhism transmission, and it is written down in "the Chronicles of Japan" what Silla gave 幡 for for (623 years) for Emperor Suiko 32 years. In addition, 幡 for the ceremony was made in the Imperial Court, and much 幡 including 万歳幡 which similarly was used at enthronement ceremony including 四神幡 which I imitated Tang and displayed to origin of the universe in the case of the New Year and enthronement ceremony was used.
