The semi-carbazide (British: Semicarbazide) is a derivative of the urea and is formed when one NH2 of the urea is replaced with a hydrazino group (-NHNH2).
The semi-carbazide is used as a color development reagent of the thin layer chromatography (TLC). I can see a result under ultraviolet irradiation when it sprays semi-carbazide on the α-keto acid on the TLC plate.
The thiocicada carbazide is the analog that an oxygen atom of the semi-carbazide was replaced by a sulfur atom.
