Low-grade uranium fuel

Low-grade uranium fuel

Low-grade uranium fuel (Ryo that ていのうしゅく uranium does not lie down) is the nuclear fuel which raised a ratio than natural uranium of fissionability uranium and points to the thing with less than in 20% of degrees of concentration [1].

Table of contents

Summary

Uranium 235 of the fissionability is included in natural uranium at the rate of approximately 0.7% for uranium 238 of the nuclearfree fissility. Enriched uranium is the thing which raised a ratio by uranium enrichment artificially of the uranium 235, and a ratio of uranium 235 after the concentration is called a degree of concentration.

The low-grade uranium fuel is used as nuclear fuel of the nuclear power plant mainly. Light water serves as a moderator and coolant with the light water reactor becoming mainstream at a world nuclear power plant. As for the light water, it is difficult to use natural uranium as fuel with a light water reactor to take in a lot of neutrons necessary for a chain of the nuclear fission. You must use around 5% of low-grade uranium as fuel from 2% of degrees of concentration to let nuclear fission continue with a light water reactor. The low-grade uranium fuel is more expensive than nuclear fuel of the natural uranium, but countries introducing a light water reactor from the general safety and economy of the nuclear power plant increase.

As for the highly-enriched uranium used in an uranium type A-bomb, degrees of concentration exceed 90% and, as a result, cause a nuclear explosion because it is easy to continue fission chain reaction. Degrees of concentration more than at least 70% are required to let nuclear fission chain it in a nuclear bomb explosively. In addition, after the collapse heat of fission products accumulating when the state that enough cooling for the nuclear fuel is not carried out is maintained for a long time, and having done meltdown (meltdown), a molten core breaks through the bottom of the pressure vessel and might develop for a serious accident by an explosion of phreatic explosion and hydrogen [2]. In addition, the war vessel which carried an atomic energy promotive body is driven by highly-enriched uranium of the density that I can use as an atom bomb.
