Bipedal robot

Bipedal robot

I call the thing which walks while keeping the balance in two legs like a human being the bipedal robot (にそくほこう robot, Biped walking robot or Biped robot) in a robot. I call the robot which the form like the human being in particular is in the shape of a humanoid, but all the humanoids may not be bipedal robot.

With a serial number linkwork comprised of links more than two connected to the foot (leg) in a rotary system, the bipedal robot has two legs. The world's first bipedal robot is WAP-1 developed in 1969 by Professor Ichiro Kato of Waseda University. P-2 (later ASIMO) of Honda announced in December, 1996 gave a big shock to people. Purpose of the bipedal robot study

The bipedal robot is studied for the purpose of a robot moving without a trouble mainly in space assuming the human activity, and working. [4] [5] [6]

In addition, there is the case intended that I operate the pedal of the car, the pedal of the bicycle, the machine assuming the human foot as the user interface including the standstill-type inflator to a robot. In the early bipedal robot, there is the thing which was produced for the purpose of studying mechanism called the human bipedalism than an engineering-like viewpoint, and elucidating it. Other than the bipedalism, there are meanses of transportation such as the thing which does not have a means of transportation like an assembling robot for the industry or the (wheel, caterpillar, many joints structure, four pieces such as the snake, six) underwater (remotely operated submersible) air (robot plane), space (unmanned space probe) above the ground.

Bipedal robot study and cultural background

The etymology of the robot is a robot named the robots which came out to an SF novel published in 1921 called "RUR" of Czech writer Karel Capek. The robot is expressed in this novel as a slave and is a story one day to resist a human being, and to start a human massacre. According to description with the original, the robot is the slave of the robot harming to a human being. It may be understood that most of robots coming out to a hollywood movie succeed an image with this original. In addition, in English, German, the Slavic language, rob- is the matter which it should note for a cultural background not to be the spelling of the good meaning. (раб: slave работа: labor to seize Slavic language to take example English robber: robbery, thief, assailant rob:)

In the robot study in Japan, indication is done the cultural connection with the mechanism by plural men of intelligence [7]. In addition, there is much admiration to the robot which is active in the same way as a human being with a human being described in comics, Animated Feature Film such as "Astro Boy" and "Doraemon" again in a person pointing it out with one of the reasons why a study of a humanoid and the bipedal robot is prosperous in Japan [8]. Actually, there are a lot of robot researchers giving such an opinion [9].

It is industrial and it

While originality is judged that bipedal robot is always Japanese technical higher by the inside and outside, it is the situation that industry is still far from with making it it. I repeat failure and steady improvement to learn is necessary for the practical use of the new technology such as the bipedal robot not the epoch-making idea by the genius, and development having a long large-scale capital throwing down and foot is indispensable. [10] As for practical use being the most promising, as for the application to nuclear power industry, suggestion was always done concerning the working space where a human being could not enter. [11] However, the correspondence of the atomic energy side in disfavor with the assumption of the accident was extremely negative. Follow only topicality and novelty, and it cannot be said that the posture of a researcher and the company which were passiveness did not have a problem either for demand. [12] In many nuclear plant accidents and disasters, there was not the thing that the Japanese walk robot technology contributes to nothing. [13] [14] [15]

History of the bipedal robot

It is a pattern walk by a handstand pendulum

Handstand pendulum

It is from about 1970 that bipedal robot was studied for the engineering. I was considered as a technique in the extension of the handstand pendulum (とうりつしんし, en:Inverted pendulum) at first, and the study approach from the area was performed flourishingly. The handstand pendulum is the control model of the pendulum which I put on the slider (direct motive posture) upside down. I control a slider so that a pendulum does not fall down. I was able to control this not to relatively easily fall down by PID control. A success example was reported in a double handstand pendulum, the triple handstand pendulum. It was thought that the control of two pairs of walks was enabled sometime soon if I studied a handstand pendulum model because I could think about four folds of human feet as a handstand pendulum model.

When I give a restriction condition walking in four folds of handstand pendulum models who likened it to a human foot and untie an exercise equation, the control quantity of each joint is provided. If they input this movement (it is said with a walk pattern) into a real robot and move it, the robots should walk theoretically. Because I was not able to generate a walk pattern from the ability of the calculator at the time in real time, I calculated a walk pattern beforehand. That is why this walk control law was called a pattern walk.

However, judging from a conclusion, this method ended in failure. Briefly, motor and structure materials at the time were poor, and a theory and a real difference were intense when I really moved it. I detected the state of the robot in real time, and it was necessary to feed back based on a certain restriction condition.

ZMP

Various restriction conditions and control methods, hardware were studied from about 1980, but it is a walk to assume ZMP a model afterwards to have become mainstream. The two pairs movement walk based on the ZMP theory was realized in 1985 by WL-10RD developed by Ichiro Kato and Atsuo Takanishi of Waseda University. When a group of Waseda University was excluded, ZMP did not attract attention very much from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. However, almost all two pairs of walk robots having high completeness use orbit generation and control using ZMP today including ASIMO of Honda.

Discovery of the upper body

Even if the study of the robot advanced, and actuator and structure materials progressed, the robot which walked like the human being did not readily come true. While the study of the human walk and the walk experiment of the robot were repeated, it has been realized again that the action of the upper body was extremely important.

Things in imitation of a bottom were often found, and, as for the walk robot at the time, the upper body was omitted by a human waist. The importance of the upper body was pointed out from the times of buco Bulatovic (Miomir Vukobratović) who was the prophet of the ZMP theory, but a part except the leg mechanism was often omitted as much as possible because the motor and slowdown machine at the time was poor.

An actuator is necessary for an ankle even if I make ZMP even if I make a pattern walk because positioning becomes basic. Therefore end weight grows big, and the actuator of each joint is strong, and it cannot but become the big thing. Naturally the structure materials get heavy, too. When the robot only for bottoms lifts one leg from a waist, half or more of the mass of the robot will move with that alone. Therefore, the position change of the center of gravity at the time of the walk was intense, and it was in a difficult control system of the narrow control of the stable domain. The robot which caused vibration shudderingly, and turned over was most of.

In addition, I was not able to ignore reaction when I raised a play leg because end weight was big. Such as the unweighting to say with a ski when begin to lower it by a kick after lifting a play leg is in a condition, and friction with the floor of the pivot leg decreases. When friction decreases, a pivot leg becomes easy to slip. It is unexpected that a pivot leg moves even if I make it ZMP even if I make a pattern walk, and there is not the sensor which I can detect even if I assumed it. When a pivot leg slipped even a little, I have fallen down in no time. It was always necessary to compensate it for dynamic balance in the movement of the upper body to move a heavy leg (even if there is still less the upper body in the present age when the performance of the actuator improved, the walk can be realized).

WABOT

The study group which Ichiro Kato of the Waseda University department of science and engineering led was existence of the pioneers of bipedal robot study. I add a nickname called WABOT to the robot which I produced including the study of the robot from the 1960s. In 1985, motion realized walking by a pattern walk with two pairs of human robots in WL-11 which was the eleventh unit of WABOT. It is the slow walk of the / step for 1.5 seconds. When it began a walk, it was impressive the big potbelly with the control unit made a sound, and to incline. It was unknown, but would deny the reaction of the play leg in the movement of the upper part of the body whether you intended from the beginning.

Because this study group used the action of the upper body more positively in 1986, I produced upper part of the body compensation type bipedal robot WL-12 that attached the big weight which I chose to the upper body on the hips of the bipedal robot. I was able to throw the weight on the all around in something like dumbbell. Aside from an appearance, the robot realized a very fluent walk. The stairs were able to perform an up rainfall, too. It is proved that the work of the upper body is extremely important to a walk of the bipedal robot by these results of research, and it becomes mainstream that bipedal robot developed after it has the upper body.

ASIMO

In 1996, Honda of the car manufacturer announced human robot P-2. The researcher at the time was surprised above all by high completeness as the system. At first there was not a cable connected outside, and autonomy control was possible. I judged the course that I showed in a mark having vision sensor from oneself and was able to walk. Besides, the point that resembled a human figure having the manipulator which I likened to an arm was novel. It was known for Official Gazette fragmentarily that Honda studied the bipedal robot, but what I performed such in earnest was not known. Therefore the announcement of P-2 gave a very big impact in both researchers and the general public. The study of the walk robot is generalized after this at a stretch, and various companies start a study of the bipedal robot. It was named ASIMO, and the robot of Honda was commercialized afterwards. In December, 2005, I realized the run of 0.08 seconds in a new model of ASIMO at 6km per an hour, jump time. It is the first among the world at the point that realized a run with the same robot from a walk (a robot performing only a run exists from the 1980s).

I it after ASIMO

A run by the bipedal robot has been studied any place other than ASIMO. Because the shock in case of the landing is bigger than a walk in the case of a run, a shock relaxation technique becomes important. In addition, the technique like posture controlling it of the weightless state is necessary for posture controlling it in the meantime because both legs leave the ground. I recognize the neighboring situation appropriately to perform the activity that advanced more, and the ability to predict the situation of afterward, and to judge is necessary. You recognize a step and an obstacle and take the action in anticipation of it and must recognize an action or the instructions of a human being and other robots. The techniques such as image recognition or the sound recognition with the camera become the technique that is important to bipedal robot, too. We have a completed feeling for the study of the walk control, and the center of the study of the bipedal robot is shifting to the study of the unification system as the humanoid now.

Structure of the bipedal robot

I it with the bipedal robot

I have two legs with the bipedal robot and am a walking robot. The robot is a linkwork comprised of a knob (link) and joint (joint), and the joint is driven by the actuators such as motors. A link is a rigid structure, and the joint is rotary mechanism or a direct motive posture.

ZMP

Eadweard Muybridge
