Academic Free License (academic free license, AFL) is a written permissive free software license by Laurence E Rosen (Lawrence E. Rosen) who was a legal counsel of Open Source Initiative (OSI) in those days in 2002 (permissive free software license).
With this license, the right like BSD license, MIT license, University of Illinois /NCSA open source license (), the Apache license is guaranteed. In other words, I can let you transform into the proprietary software that a book consented to with this license is consented to with a monopolistic license, but it is aimed for solving the problems of those licenses in the AFL.
It is the following matters to be aimed in AFL.
- You write it about a copyright of the software, and make it clear which software receives a license.
- Include all copyrights affecting the software.
- Include a complete patent for the software.
- Do not accept the right about the trademark of the licenser of the software at all.
- Guarantee that you distribute software whether the licenser has a copyright under one of this license.
- A copyright subsists in AFL in itself, but give rights to copy it, and to distribute it to anyone unless I make the changes such as retouchs to the text.
AFL version 1.2 and 2.1 do not have GNU GPL and the compatibility [1]. The free software foundation does not comment on version 3.0, but, according to Eric Raymond, is compatible with GPL [2]. However, according to the license diffusion committee of the OSI, the AFL was told "to have made other famous licenses (in particular, Apache License) lengthy" at mid-2006 [3].
