Masatoku Ogawara

Masatoku Ogawara (brook and others Masanori, culture 14 years (1817) - April 3, 1868 (April 25, 1868)) is a senior retainer of the Ueno country Maebashi feudal clan of the late Tokugawa period. The popular name is the left shrine. It is a child dragon in a character. I am known as Samiya Ogawara (おがわらさみや).

When a foreign ship came to visit a shore in generous politics late in life, so-called coastal defense Daiba, coastal defense encampment was built in Kazusa financial power of a nation Tsu by the need of the Gulf of Edo defense (1801). When Yoshinobu Tokugawa who returned to Edo after a fight of Toba, Fushimi entered the confinement to the house, the Maebashi feudal clan showed will of the allegiance to the new government quickly, but the adherence to the shogunate forces consisting of guerilla unit and the former Jozai feudal clan soldiers who led Hachiro Iba and others concentrated it in Kisarazu and showed a posture to attack Futtsu encampment. Ogawara demands withdrawal of the old Tokugawa shogunate army, but the old Tokugawa shogunate army requires it adversely to evacuate Futtsu encampment and Daiba together with a weapon. There are only few feudal clan soldiers in the Futtsu encampment, and Ogawara entrusts Senzaemon Shirai of the prefect (commander) with a soldier out of necessity; and, surrender bloodless in encampment, on the spot; took responsibility, and killed itself, and ended.

However, this becomes the rumor "that the Maebashi feudal clan communicated secretly with the old Shogunate forces" and reaches the new government side, and the Maebashi feudal clan receives severe censure later from the new government. Because Shirai who knew this killed itself saying that I bore a full responsibility and died, the new government assumed it no object about the act of the Maebashi feudal clan.

In the Maebashi feudal clan, Ogawara and Shirai were able to go around 敬 as the person who was sacrificed to save a feudal clan and a feudal clan soldier in the future. In addition, I praise the wise decision of the both persons who saved encampment Shiroshita from the useless war in Futtsu, and I put up a toba every year even today, and a memorial service is performed.
