It is named the tree of soapberry family (old maple department) maple genus (Acer) generally with the maple (槭, maple crest, maple).

Relation with the culture
Japanese name
Because the origin of the name of the maple resembles the hand of the frog in a leaf, I am called "カエルデ", and it is said that it was corrupted.
The kanji "maple" originally points at the Liquidambar formosana of the Japanese witch hazel not this seed.
