Honeywell (by Honeywell, the Japanese reading with "ハニウェル") is an American multinational enterprise established in 1886 and it produces an electronic control system and automation apparatuses and sells it. It is the company which offers technical service and avionics to National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Boeing, the American Department of Defense.
It is one of the Fortune 100 companies and is a huge company having approximately 130,000 employees (beat and is the United States 58,000) now [2]. There is the head office in the Morris town of New Jersey. From December 7, 1925 to February 9, 2008, it was one of the brands to constitute the Dow Jones Average.
It is the company which Honeywell and Allied Corp. signal merge the current Honeywell International (Honeywell International Inc.) in 1999, and was born. Allied Corp. signal had a bigger scale and still assumed the head office of the Allied Corp. signal of the New Jersey Morris town the head office, but left famous Honeywell for a company name as a brand name.
The brand of Honeywell is well known to general consumers. It is a motor part sold in the thermostat for the house, a turbocharger of Garrett, the brand names of Preston / Fulham / Autolite that is particularly well known.

History
The technique that became the base of Honeywell is thermostat damper flapper which Albert Butts () invented for coal furnaces in 1885 and a motor and the process control that Minneapolis heat regulator (Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company) of the establishment of a business improved in 1886. Mark C Honeywell () is Indiana ウォバッシュ and, in 1906, founds Honeywell heating スペシャルティ (Honeywell Heating Specialty Company). Minneapolis heat regulator merges with the company in 1927. I assumed the company name after the merger Minneapolis Honeywell regulator (Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company). W R sweat shirt () took office as mark C Honeywell, the first chairperson to President Hatsuyo [3].
Times of the sweat shirt
W, R sweat shirt and son Harold continued dominating the top of Honeywell (the Minneapolis heat regulator which is the forerunner) (from 1886) for 75 years. W, the R sweat shirt let an innovative idea called the temperature control with the thermostat succeed as business. Harold succeeded Honeywell in 1934 and commanded Honeywell through growth and the times of the world advance and led it to the world-famous technology leader.
"H.W. which commends the employee who passes more than 30 years until it merges with Allied Corp. signal in 1999, and it is a scientific technical aspect, and contributed to Honeywell Sweatt Engineer-Scientist Award" was conferred every year.
Management of Binger
In 1943, James H Binger () was poached by Honeywell and took office as a chairperson in president assumption of office, 1965 in 1961. Binger was brought up as a son of the doctors in Minnesota Saint Paul. I learned economics in Yale University and learned a law in the University of Minnesota. I found a job in the law office of Minneapolis after graduation, and Honeywell was that client.
I made much of profit than sales, and Binger improved sale technique on taking office as the chairperson of Honeywell. In addition, I was positive and made six production bases abroad to step forward abroad and came to produce 12% of all amount of production. In addition, I changed the company name from the Minneapolis Honeywell regulator to current Honeywell [4].
Honeywell was a camera and an origin of of the Pentax (existing Pentax RICOH imaging) company import of photograph-related apparatuses from the 1950s through the mid-1970s. I sold the product in the name of Honeywell Pentax (Honeywell Pentax) in the United States. Binger was a person in charge of this business, and he led military demand, aerospace, the business expansion to the field of the computer at the same time from 1961 through 1978. Binger retired himself/herself from the chairperson in 1978, but was confined to a consultant until I died. The successor is President Hatsuyo Edson Spenser of the Honeywell control systems (Honeywell Control Systems) (Edson Spencer).
In 1953, I developed servomechanism Automatic Master Sequence Selector which was controllable on various stages (from タクシング and a takeoff until just before a landing) of the flight of the plane in cooperation with an American air force (I was common now, but was an advanced technique in those days). I act like a mechanical piano and I relay an order and can largely reduce the load of the pilot to the auto-pilot of the plane [5]. I am technically similar to missile guidance and numerical control.
Computer business
In 1954, it is stepped forward by joint management with Raytheon by business of the mainframe production. I bought an investment of Raytheon soon and had the section of Honeywell. The early computer has Honeywell 1800 for succession in Honeywell 800 ().
In addition, I purchase Computer Control Corporation which dealt with a minicomputer. In the 1960s, Honeywell was counted in one company of "Snow White and seven dwarfs" in a computer industry. IBM is Snow White, and Burroughs, CDC, GE, NCR, RCA, UNIVAC are counted to a dwarf other than Honeywell. In 1970, Honeywell bought a computer section of GE. A company organization was reorganized with this and was divided into Honeywell information systems (Honeywell Information Systems, HIS) and Honeywell control systems (Honeywell Control Systems). When RCA sold computer business to UNIVAC, "seven dwarfs" decreased to five, and they came to be called "BUNCH" [6].
In 1963, I release the small computer Honeywell 200 series against IBM 1401. This series continued until the early 1970s [7]. NEC entered into the technical cooperation contract about the computer with Honeywell in 1962. NEC releases the Honeywell 200 series as the NEAC2200 series and will increase a share in Japan rapidly.
In 1986, I establish French computer company bourgeois (Bull) and joint venture "Honeywell bulldog" with NEC. In 1991, Honeywell sold computer section HIS to a bourgeois and completely withdrew from computer business.
War industry
It was time of World War II that Honeywell entered the war industry and produced the parts of the plane in those days. It came to produce various products since the age of the Vietnam War. Cluster bomb、Missile guidance system、Napalm、Mineなどである.
I developed an inertial guidance subsystem to use by X-20 project and succeeded in a test flight using NF-101B in August, 1963. The X-20 project was called off in December, 1963 [8]. A citizens movement called Honeywell project happened in about 1968 and has been going to stop weaponry of Honeywell [9].
In 1990, Honeywell let a munition section make a spin-off as Alliant Techsystems. But Honeywell produces the aerospace-related products such as a jet engine, an electronic instruction system, the cockpit apparatus afterwards.
In 1996, Honeywell purchased Duracraft and entered an electric fan, a humidifier, the household appliance market including the air conditioner. The household appliance section was sold to Kaz Incorporated later.
Honeywell participates in the consortium of the company about nuclear weapon production in the United States of America. In the factory of Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies which succeeded the munition section of the Allied Corp. signal, it produces 85% of parts not to be related to directly with the nucleus of the nuclear weapon and assembles it.
Special material
It is the manufacturer which chemist William H Nichols () founded in 1870 in the origin of the special material business of Honeywell sulfate. Nichols ran some companies at the end of 19th century and pulled Chemical Industrial in the United States. In 1920, the company of Nichols has begun to greatly grow up with cooperation of investors Eugene Meyer (). They merge five medium and small-sized businesses, and establish Allied Chemical & Dye Company; is Allied Chemical Corp. later I renamed と. The company becomes a part of the Allied Corp. signal later and will take special material business of Honeywell. In addition, Meyer bought Washington Post in Coolidge, Hoover, the government of the President of three generations called Truman in work, 1933. Meyer and the name of Nichols are added to the building in the head office site of the Morris town.
Attempted merger of GE and Honeywell
In 2000, GE announces that there is an intention to acquire Honeywell. The aggregate market value of Honeywell was more than 21 billion dollars in those days. The merger was authorized in the American authorities, but competition policy charge Mario Monti of European Commission prevented a merger on July 3, 2001. This is because I felt uneasy about what oligopoly is up by selling in combination various products by the merger of both companies in fields such as a jet engine or the avionics, and other companies cannot retain. In contrast, competition was improved by mergers and acquisitions, and the American authorities insisted that they led to price erosion. U.S. judiciary Assistant Secretary Charles James commented on decision of EU saying "it is completely opposite to the antitrust spirit of law" [10].
In 2007, GE purchased Smiths Aerospace of business contents similar to Honeywell. [11]
The merger with the Allied Corp. signal and the post
Allied Corp. signal and the merger that were aerospace, the product for the car, the major maker of industrial materials in 1998. It became the name of current "Honeywell International, Inc. ". Allied Corp. signal had a bigger scale, and the head office was put in the stronghold New Jersey Morris town of the Allied Corp. signal again, but the company name after the merger became well known Honeywell as a brand name. When I closed the old head office of Minneapolis, more than 1000 employees were discharged. The stock prices largely fall after a merger soon, and it is about 2007 that I returned to the level before the merger.
In October, 2008, I was chosen as "Canada's Top 100 Employers" by Mediacorp Canada Inc. In addition, I was chosen as "Greater Toronto's Top Employers" and was announced with a Toronto star paper [12].
Six Sigma Plus
I introduce the quality control technique such as six sigma and the Lean production method positively, and Honeywell names this Six Sigma Plus. This reduces a mistake and a defect and is intended to reduce time and cost. Honeywell announces the company philosophy on the pretence of Honeywell Operating System (HOS), and only the name is similar to Toyota production method (Toyota Production System) recently.

The Honeywell aerospace is based in Arizona Phoenix in a company producing an engine, avionics for the aviation.
Plane engine
The business of the turbine engine of the Honeywell aerospace can date back to Garrett air research and two source of the ライカミング engines turbine section. The Garrett air research was established in 1936 by Cliff Garrett. I was known as Garrett turbine engine company, and the turbine engine section was purchased in 1968 by signal oil. It became the Garrett engine section of the Allied Corp. signal by Signal Cos. merging with Allied Corp. in 1985, and having become the Allied Corp. signal. In 1994, the Allied Corp. signal purchased the ライカミング engine turbine section of Textron, Inc. and merged with Garrett engine and became the Allied Corp. signal engines section of the Allied Corp. signal aerospace company. [13] It became a part of the current Honeywell aerospace in 1999.
Avionics
The Allied Corp. signal purchased Honeywell in 1999 and merged and changed the company name to the Honeywell international. Honeywell of the forerunner already owned most of the avionics sections of the old Sperry flight systems company which I purchased in 1986 in those days. These Sperry avionics sections were purchased by the company (Unisys where the company name was Burroughs) which purchased all of Sperry by Honeywell in the beginning in 1986.
This is considered probably to have been the intention that a purpose of the purchase sells off other sections only for the purpose of UNIVAC where Burroughs / Unisys is a computer section of Sperry Corporation (a computer company).
The avionics section of old Sperry supplied a wide product for the aviation. On the other hand, the section of Honeywell supplied a product of the avionics such as some inertial navigation system and groundprox equally (before 1986).
Honeywell technology solutions
Honeywell technology solutions (HTS) is research and development section of Honeywell. I base on Bangalore, India, and 5,000 or more act. The development center of HTS is in Hyderabad (India), マドゥライ (India), upper mirage (China), Brno (Czech). Most of flight management devices are produced at these research institutes, and they are examined. HTS provides research and development service in each business section of Honeywell. The production of motor parts such as radiators started recently, too.
Environmental problem
That, according to the United States of America Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), polluted land and the company where I am related most to are Honeywell with hazardous waste to prescribe by the superfund method () [14]. Honeywell is considered to be the 44th place of the company with the responsibility for air pollution in the United States and releases a toxic substance of 4,250,000 kg in the atmosphere every year [15]. In 2001, Honeywell agreed the payment of the indemnification of fine and 772,000 dollars of 150,000 dollars about the following matters [16].
- The matter that has radiated a dangerous toxic substance in the atmosphere
- The matter that neglected the repair of the frozen facilities containing the alkyl halide or a report
- Benzene, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, dichlorodifluoromethane, sulfuric acid, sulphur dioxide, inappropriate report about the discharge of the ε-caprolactam
In 2003, the federal district judge of Newark gave it an order for contribution of 400 million dollars for the removal of the chromic waste as "a risk of the urgent damage for public sanitation and the security and the big damage to environment" for Honeywell [17]. Same year, Honeywell paid 3,600,000 dollars in trichloroethylene pollution in Illinois Lisle to avoid becoming the trial [18]. In 2004, New York announced that I demanded payment of purification expense 448 million dollars by the matter that toxic substances such as mercury of 74,000 kg were dumped in Onondaga for Honeywell [19]. In 2005, I demanded purification of the chromic pollution area that it was more than it in 100 places of New Jersey and accused three companies (as for the others オクシデンタル ペトロリウム and PPG) including Honeywell [20]. Chrome is metal said to cause lung cancer, an ulcer, dermatitis.
In 2006, Honeywell announced that I stopped the production of mercury switches. It in this way becomes the reduction of 11,300 kg of mercury, lead 2,800 kg, chromate 1,500 kg every year. Mercury in particular is 5% of all consumption in the United States [21]. I evaluated this, and EPA gave Honeywell 2006 National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) Achievement Award [22].
When Honeywell performed illegal waste disposal to cause water pollution for several hundred times from 1974 through 2004, I insisted on Arizona and, in 2008, reached the agreement in what Honeywell contributed 1 million dollars to fine payment of 5 million dollars and a local atmosphere purification project to [23].
Contribution to society
Honeywell is active in contribution to society and carries out a program called Hometown Solutions [24]. By this program, the rebuilding of the building which collapsed, a longtime collaborative relationship to National Center for Missing and Exploited Children [26] called "Got2bSafe"[25] are performed by an employee volunteer and contribution by funding to a study of science and the mathematics, hurricane "Katrina". The created book is distributed to schools more than 72,000 in the United States by Got2bSafe [27] and reaches the more than 5000000 primary schoolchildren. In addition, I push forward the program called Honeywell Nobel Initiative and host the lecture of the prize winner of Nobel Prize in Physics or Nobel Prize in Chemistry and am going to allow you to read the design online [28].
Criticism
In December, 2011, in independents tissue Public Campaign (), Honeywell spent 18,300,000 dollars on lobbying and though profit of 4,900 million dollars appeared, a corporation tax was exempted from from 2008 through 2010 and received tax return of 34 million dollars adversely and criticized it when 15% of annual salary in 2010 of five management top improved it while discharging the employee in 968 in after 2008 and reached 54,200,000 dollars [29].
MINOLTA Honeywell patent suit
In 1987, I insist on a breach of contract about an infringement and the technology transfer of four patents of the company for an autofocus technique against MINOLTA (existing: Konica Minolta) and the local corporation, and it is a trial, and the New Jersey federal district court recognizes patent infringement in February, 1992, and, as a result, the MINOLTA side will pay approximately 16,500 million yen to the Honeywell side. This happened under the background in the times when the issue of issue of trade friction, submarine patent is complicated and will spark a complicated reaction about strictness of the American suit society, importance of the suit tactics, the way of intellectual property rights.
