Process of the composition

This work was composed for a chromatic scale harp (chromatic scale harp) which play Elle Corporation developed. The chromatic scale harp increased the number of strings and was going to facilitate the performance of the chromatic scale whereas a conventional harp was tuned by the diatonic scale and needed pedal operation in a chromatic scale. This musical instrument does not reach the spread, and it is to the harp which the pedal harp of the double action method that エラール company developed repeats improvement, and is used today after all.

However, at the time of invention, this chromatic scale harp attracted attention, and the lecture of this musical instrument was held at the House of Brussels royal music in 1900. Play Elle Corporation asked Debussy for the musical piece for contests at the Houses of music for the spread of these musical instruments in 1904. I received it, and Debussy composed this work from April of the year through May. But Debussy seemed to think that a pedal harp was superior rather than the reason that liked a chromatic scale harp in particular. This work is played with a pedal harp today, too.

In addition, I asked it for a work that エラール company was opposed and showed the predominance of the pedal harp in Lavelle, and "an introduction and allegro" were born.

The premiere was carried out by harp solo of the ヴュルムゼ = Dell cool wife, コンセール コロンヌ of the Edouard コロンヌ conduct on November 6, 1904.
