Etorofu Channel (пр.Фриза)

The straits (water supply) of approximately 40km in width that the Etorofu Channel (I obtain it, and fatty tuna lies down I am, and how about Russian: freeze straits ПроливФриза) separates 得撫島 (Ostrov Urup) at the south end of north Chishima (central part Chishima) from Etorofu at the north end of south Chishima of the Chishima Islands. The depth of the water is deep with 1,300m and is one of the strategic points of the traffic to appear from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Pacific.

In addition, it is the temperate zone and a boundary with the subarctic zone, and broad leaf forest is not seen in the island north than Etorofu, and there is a botanical distribution boundary line (Miyabe line).

"I discover" these straits as a European for the first time, and, in 1643, Dutch explorer Martin ゲルリッツエン fleece of the Netherlands East India Company does it and will be called the fleece straits later.

I fixed these straits for the border of both Japan and Russia in the Japan and Russia sum pro-treaty of 1855. North Chishima became the Japan territory by Karafuto, Chishima exchange treaty of 1875 and was not the border of the two countries.

Because the Japanese Government requires it after Chishima occupation of the Soviet Union of 1945 and the Chishima dominium abandonment of 1952 of Japan, the Japan-Soviet Joint Declaration in 1956 to return it saying that the northern territories (south Chishima) are "territories peculiar to Japan", a borderline is described on the Japanese map into these straits.
