Summary

A first edition was published in 1993 by the tundra press, and "the comics studies" were reprinted by kitchen sink press, para-docs press of DC Comics, ヴェルティゴ comics and ハーパーペレニアル.

With this book, the technique of various comics used in definition of "comics" (comics), historic development of the comics media, basic term and this product in itself is handled. This book is a vehicle and a theory book called the comic that it is read most widely and had a big influence on about the communication medium. In addition, this book deserves attention as an example of the large-scale application of the comics expression to any place other than the purpose to spell a story.

When the comics are comprised of a pyramid of abstractness (figure), concrete (a certain reality picture), meaning characteristics (language), I see through and am explained about a mysterious effect (top interval) to have between a top and a top, simultaneous expression (specificity of the Japanese comic), drawn line in time and space and an effect, the language (words) of the balloon and the interaction of the picture, positioning, a color of a form, grammar, the constitution.

Original title

I parodied most important work "Understanding Media" (a Japanese translation "principle "media theory" of the human being expansion") of McLuhan (by the translation with notes of the Japanese translation).

Japanese translation

This was stretched from the American publication agent, and Toshio Okada noticed the innovativeness of this book as soon as I read it. After showing it, I was strongly said to be it when I started Japanese translation by all means, and Okada found a publishing company (art publishing company), a translator (Norimitsu Kaiho) in Kentaro Takekuma, both who were the author of the comics technique book that Okada appreciated till then Fusanosuke Natsume, and Japanese translation was published on October 15, 1998 by Toshio Okada supervising a translation.

Influence

"The comics studies" receive the praise from the well-known comic artists such as Art Spiegelman, will Eisner, the ギャリー toe roux dough (toe roux Dawe took away this book in a book review of the New York Times), and joint developer Andy ハーツフェルド of Macintosh speaks this book with "the one which rose in insight in the book about the design of the visual user interface written so far most" [²].

The Daniel pink of the author read widely in business world praises it highly in most important work "high concept" (Japanese translation: Kenichi Omae) very much saying "everybody roars with laughter when it is said, "this book enters the best class in the book which I read so far", but they never know it". I was affected by this book and have done the pink until a stay afterwards in Japan to study Japanese comics. His recent work "six lessons to be born, and to be replaced to an able guy" finished writing the whole book by comics [³].

Most of conclusions of McLeod in this book caused a discussion, but, as for the consideration about the "sign" nature of the comics in this book and the concept of "the top interval", it was the general threshold of the discussion about the comics expression.

Sequel

Scott MacLeod publishes two sequels of "Making Comics" (2006) which is a study about the basic technique to constitute "Reinventing Comics: How Imagination and Technology Are Revolutionizing an Art Form" (2000) and the comics that proposed technique that the comics media changes by a form same as this book and grows up.
