Irene Munton (Irene Manton,FRS[1], from April 17, 1904 to May 13, 1988) is a British botanist. It is famous for fern and an algal study. I became the chairperson of association of London Linnaeus as a woman for the first time.

Life

Irene was born in the house of the dentist of the family of the ancienne noblesse. Therefore, her original name was affected by France, but she left that I used the name at the age of 18 years old and chose "Irene". Her older sister has Sydney Munton (Sidnie Manton FRS, 1902-1979) of the entomologist. She learned with Froebel デモンストレイション school (the Froebel Demonstration School) (English version) and Saint Paul girls' school (St. Paul's Girls' School) (English version) in Hammersmith in western London.

In 1923, I entered a school of higher grade in a garfish ton college of Cambridge University. Because Cambridge University was not yet like a welcome, she was unsatisfactory, and, in the time, it came to collaborate it with Gustav Otto Rosenberg (Gustaf Otto Rosenberg) of Stockholm for a woman afterwards. She was conferred doctorate (PhD) on in an article about "Brassicaceae" by the Manchester University.

The Great Hall, Leeds University

Irene spent most of the carriers at the university in Leeds University (University of Leeds, national university in West Yorkshire Leeds, the U.K.). She acted as a honorary professor in botanical professors afterwards from 1946 through 1969 there and studied fern, the alga [2]. Mating (hybridization) of the fern, polyploidy (polyploidy), the study on no fusion reproduction (apomixis) were summarized in writing "problems (Problems of cytology and evolution in the pteridophyta) of her 1950 about evolution and the cytology of the fern". About the algal study, is famous by having used an electron microscope for a cytologic study of cilia, her who is known to worldwide by having clarified flagellar structure [1]; [3]. She left a scientific book more than 140 as an author or a collaborator.

Irene left collection of contemporary art, Orient art by will in the lead university. Many pictures were hung on the wall of Botany House of the Leeds University where she spent the carrier [4].

Commendation

Linnean Medal

Irene was picked in the pole microstructure of the plant and a study on evolution in March, 1961 by a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1969, I won Linnaeus medal of association of London Linnaeus with Ethelwynn Trewavas (British ichthyologist, 1900-1993), and I was appointed from 1973 through 1976 by the chairwoman that it was the first among association of Linnaeus. In addition, I was picked in 1969 by foreign honorary membership of American Academy of Arts and Sciences (American Academy of Arts and Sciences, AAAS) [5]. Schleiden medal (Schleiden Medal) was conferred in 1972 by German natural science academy Leo Poll Dena [6]; [7].

Death post

In 1990, association of London Linnaeus founded "Irene Munton Prize" (the Irene Manton Prize) as a prize to commend an article of the superior botany in the education year [8].

The bioscientific school building of the Leeds university built for her death tenth anniversary in 1998 praised her achievement and was named "Irene Munton Building" (the Irene Manton Building) [2].

Psychology society (The British Phycological Society) (edition in the U.K.) in the U.K. confers "Irene Munton Prize" (the Irène Manton prize) for the superior graduate student who announced it in a regular academic conference [9].
