ツァイゼ salt

ツァイゼ salt

Anion of the ツァイゼ salt
[PtCl32-C2H4)]

The ツァイゼ salt (Zeise's salt) is K[PtCl3(C2H4)]. It is organometallic containing platinum with a chemical formula called H2O. The color is yellow, and this anion becomes the complex having a ligand of η2-ethylene by stability for air. This material is usually composed under the stannous chloride catalyst by K2[PtCl4] and ethylene.

Molecular weight 368.61, melting point 220 degrees Celsius. The CAS registration number 16,405-35-9 (one water salt…In other words, ツァイゼ salt), 12,012-50-9 (anhydride) of the narrow sense, 123,334-22-5 (xH2O), 12,275-00-2 (anion).

History

The ツァイゼ salt is one of the organometallic reported for a long time [1]. William Christopher ツァイゼ which was a professor of the Copenhagen University reacted platinum (IV) chloride and boiling ethanol in the 1820s and composed it and announced that it was a compound containing ethylene. ユストゥス phone リービッヒ which was an influential figure of the chemistry world at the time often criticized an opinion of ツァイゼ, but Birnbaum composed a compound containing ethylene in 1868 and was proved if was right [2]; [3].

The ツァイゼ salt attracted the chemist's attention from specificity of the molecular structure in the late 19th century. However, the structure did not completely become clear until a technique of the X-ray diffraction developed in the 20th century [4].

A study is pushed forward eagerly in a field of the organic metal chemistry, and the ツァイゼ salt will bring about new concepts such as the number of ハプト.

Related compounds

Besides, a lot of compounds containing ethylene are composed. For example, platinum is 0 values in three coordination in ethylene - screw - triphenyl phosphine - platinum [(C6H5)3P]2Pt(H2C=CH2).

Structure

In ツァイゼ salt and the related compounds, alkene turns around metal - alkene combination in moderate activation energy. π combination between most metal and alkene is weaker than σ combination in the analysis of the high energy barrier. Because all four protons are equivalent with the anion of the ツァイゼ salt, I cannot measure a rotary wall in Kobo for a nuclear magnetic resonance. However, I can measure, for example, the value of metal - ethylene-binding rotary wall with the symmetric low ethylene compound such as CpRh(C2H4)2 [5].
