The museum Abashiri prison (はくぶつかんあばしりかんごく) is a museum in Abashiri-shi, Hokkaido.

Summary

The outdoors Museum where preservation shows the former building of the Abashiri prison having Abashiri and a close relation from the Meiji era on. It is located in the Tentozan halfway up a mountain appointed in "the natural beauty spot" of the country and is in the area of Abashiri Seminational Park.

It is the oldest in Japan for [⁴], the facilities of the prison, and "five wings radial one-storied house building bunch" which became the public start (1985) on October 10 in 1985 becomes oldest in the world for wooden execution architecture [⁵].

In "Abashiri prison old Futami ヶ 岡農場食堂棟" and "the prison dining room which used as a dining room of the prisons," really provide "the experience prison food" which reproduced the menu of the meal which an inmate eats at current Abashiri prison (time-limited); [⁶].

There is a paid guided tour free of charge.

History

A reconstruction plan of the Abashiri prison was published in (1973) in 1973, and Hisashi Sato of the Abashiri newspaper publisher (I cease to publish it now) head of a company concerned about a precious building being lost proposed the removing and rebuilding preservation of the prison building. The organizations such as Abashiri-shi, Hokkaido, Ministry of Justice concerned cooperated with this, too and came to establish a foundation. Because a foundation borrowed a fund of 900 million yen for removing and rebuilding and the reconstruction of the building, Sato had an effort such as grinding personal security of the borrowed money, and the financial institution loaned a fund to the trial called "the museum design of prison facilities", too [⁷].

• 1983 (1983): The opening.
• 1996（HeiseiEight years): Registration Museum authorization [¹].
• 2005 (2005): 教誨堂, five wings radial one-storied house building bunch, Futami ヶ 岡農場 become the registration tangible cultural property of the country. In addition, with these buildings having been appointed to the important cultural property of the country in 2016, the registration as the registration tangible cultural property is crossed on February 9, 2016 [⁸].
• 2008 (2009): I exceed 10 million people of entering a building in total.
• 2010 (2010): An execution museum renews it and becomes the prison history building.
• 2012 (2012): Abashiri prison foundation shifts to the public interest foundation [³]. A Government building, a bake bricks cell, a mirror bridge entrance sentry box, a mirror bridge exit sentry box, a west gate sentry box, a rear gate, a rear gate sentry box become the registration tangible cultural property of the country [⁹]. The registration as the registration tangible cultural property is crossed with what was appointed to the important cultural property of the country in 2016 about the above-mentioned house, Government building on February 9, 2016 [¹⁰].
