Joachim patty Neil (Joachim Patinir, about 1480 - October 5, 1524) is a painter of the initial Frandre group. I was from current (the Wallonia district) in southern Belgium and drew a lot a history picture, a scenery picture. It is said whether it is the uncle of the landscape artist ヘッリ メット fatty reply (en:Herri met de Bles) of Frandre and is considered to be the pioneer of the northern Renaissance scenery picture [1].

General statement
Patty Neil is registered as St. Luke artist guilder of Antwerp that spent the most of the life by birth of current Belgium, D naan or ブーヴィーニュ in 1515. It is thought that I might train myself with ヘラルト ダヴィト registered as a member of the guild in ブルッヘ in the same year. Patty Neil goes on a trip with ダヴィト, ard re-Ann E then Brandt (en:Adriaen Isenbrandt) to Genoa, Italy in 1511.
Friend Albrecht Durer attends at the second wedding ceremony of patty Neil in 1521 and draws a portrait of patty Neil. Durer called patty Neil "splendid landscape artist er gute Landschaftmaler". Patty Neil described only scenery among them, and other painters described the person, and a lot of things which drew a small person on the very large scenery might add it to a work of patty Neil. Such "division of labor" was becoming common by the Netherlands picture at the time.
The work of patty Neil is the same in a previous generation, and there are many things bigger than a picture of Netherlands including Hieronymus Bosch who created a very large landscape at the time. I let you let detailed observation of nature and a lyrical fantasy fuse and add the very large scenery that patty Neil describes, and the most suitable examples include "the escape (The Flight into Egypt) to Egypt" of the Antwerp r. art museum possession. The rock described in scenery is more magnificent than real scenery of the hometown D naan of patty Neil, and it becomes vivid. I take out a perspective by using the color change of green and the blue and can be characterized by expressing extensive space.
There are "escape rest (The Rest on the Flight into Egypt) in Egypt in the way" (Museo Nacional del Prado possesses a picture of four pieces of patty Neil, and Museo Nacional del Prado hits it to two pieces with the signature of patty Neil), "baptism (The Baptism of Christ) of Christ" (Vienna history of art Museum), "St. John (St. John at Patmo) of the Patmos Island" (London National Gallery.a studio product of patty Neil), "scenery (Landscape with the Shepherds) to need the breeding of sheep" (Antwerp royal art museum), "rest (The Rest on the Flight into Egypt) in the Egyptian escape road" (Minneapolis art museum) as other work examples. There are three altar images called "Saint ヒエロニムス (The Penitence of St. Jerome) performing rite of repentance" said to have possibilities to be a work of patty Neil elsewhere [2].
The work which a signature of patty Neil remains slightly has only five pieces, but certainly there are many works said to be the work of the studio of patty Neil or patty Neil. I can read one of the remaining signatures with "(Opus) Joachim D. Patinier". "D" of the capital letter signing means "Dionantensis of the D naan", and a hometown of patty Neil is regarded as the proof of being D naan. I have displayed 21 points of pictures of the studio product of patty Neil or patty Neil in Museo Nacional del Prado. However, the picture of eight pieces of remainder listed in a catalog was not displayed [4].
Patty Neil was a pioneer of the scenery picture as the independent field and took pride in being the first person in the first landscape artists in Frandre. Patty Neil might produce a picture in friends with not only Durer but also Quentin Masai jointly. I produced "the temptation (The Temptation of St Anthony) of St. Ann Toni Usu" of the Museo Nacional del Prado possession with Masai, and Masai draws a person by scenery patty Neil. There was Albrecht alto dollar fur to be able to tell similarly to be the pioneer of the scenery picture, but a style was different from the paysage of patty Neil in a painter of the same age at all.
Patty Neil dies in Antwerp in 1524, and it is the guardian of sons whom the Quentin Masai who was a friend was left for.
Charon across the Styx river
Summary
"Charon across the Styx river" is a picture of the Museo Nacional del Prado possession that I described big river Styx of the world of the dead and ferryman Charon in. I treated a classic subject of Greek myths, and "hell edition" (78 Vol. 3) and connection of epic "Aeneid" (369 Vol. 6) of poet ウェルギリウス of the ancient Roman age and epic "Divine Comedy" of Dante are deep. A big person getting on the ferry is too small in "[5] to carry the soul of the dead person to the gate of the Hades" Charon, and do not know an expression well; nobody has already described a scene taken to right heaven or the left hell towards the line of the ship in the soul of the dead person. One of four rivers Styx river drifting to the underground world of the dead bottom layer which flows from the top through the bottom divides a screen in right and left. A spring of heaven is drawn on the divided screen left side and warm water flowing from Lettie River "forgets all it in the water of the Lettie river visiting heaven in the past and is considered to be [6] with the power to guarantee everlasting youth". Hell that patty Neil thinks about is drawn on the screen right side, and this comes under a big influence of Hieronymus Bosch. The gate of the Hades is drawn on the point of the river flowing through the right and adapts writing of writer Pausanias of the ancient Greece "which there is one of the gates of the Hades to the hell at the south end of the Peloponnesus, and the Cape マタパン can see in the entrance" [7]. Cerberus having three necks is drawn in hellhound beside the gate of the Hades and lets the soul of all dead people passing through the gate of the Hades frighten. I beckon left Kawagishi, and there is an angel showing a way to heaven, but the soul of the dead person of the ferry steamer ignores it and stares toward the hell.
Constitution and coloration
As for patty Neil, three colors, the screen foreground set which can be called the model of the manierisme style are brown, and the background describes this "world scenery Weltlandschaft" using the blue that bluish green and white are near [8]. This technique recognized that patty Neil made it widely available brought very large depth and a bird's-eye view-like viewpoint in paysage [8]. Furthermore, I create heaven and hell, right and wrong effectively and distribute the chosen color. In heaven of the screen left, an angel is described in the green hill covered to the sky of the bright blue, the blue river such as the crystal, shining spring, grass. On the other hand, the dark sky surrounds Hell in the screen right depths, and a criminal is hung on one of the gate of the Hades, and flame blazes in the hill.
The screen foreground set is comprised of a brown rock of heaven and a brown tree of the hell. As for the screen mid-distance, Kojima that colored grass grows thick is described in a river and green and blue and I paint the pale sky dotted with clouds and a river of the slightly gloomy blue with the screen background divided in the horizon and am divided.
Significance of this picture
It is a northern Renaissance-like picture, and "Charon across the Styx river" is an immediate early picture of the manierisme. The influence of the traditional picture of one district and the picture from the foreign countries fused in the 16th century and was the time when a new picture was established in Germany and Netherlands. Painters of a lot of patty Neil beginning went on a trip to Italy and got a new idea about picture technique particularly technique to express nature in a picture. As for the religious picture which patty Neil drew, beautiful paysage based on the influence of the traditional northern picture which I received from Hieronymus Bosch and the minute nature observation changed into the work that it was in one.
