Jacob's ladder (Schoenberg)

Oratorio "Jacob's ladder" (- ladder, Die Jakobsleiter) is the unfinished oratorio that Arnold Schonberg composed. It was elaborated a plan as a solo, mixed chorus, a work for orchestras and started the writing of the script by Schoenberg from 1914 through 1915, and at first all scripts consisting of two copies were completed in 1917. I started composition in 1915 during script writing, but because I was drafted in World War I, I stop composition and most of Part 1 were completed in postwar 1926, but stop it again there [1]. I dealt with some orchestration in the United States in 1944 after the exile, but Schoenberg died in 1951 with being unfinished, and 700 measures of sketching of all Part 1 consisting of 11 pieces in total was had for afterwards [2].

Vin Fried ツィリヒ of the pupil writes Part 1 supplementarily by the request of the Gerd rood widow and, after death of Schoenberg, is completed.

The premiere only for 180 measures of beginnings was carried out by Hans Rosbaud conduct, Northern Germany broadcast symphony orchestra and a chorus in Hamburg on January 10, 1958. The all songs premiere was carried out by Rafael Kubelik conduct in Vienna on June 16, 1961. In addition, the performance by the Bruno Maderna conduct of the Radio Netherlands symphony orchestra in the Netherlands festival of 1972 is broadcasted by FM broadcast of NHK in our country.

It is the work of the transition period to go from free atonality to the twelve-tone technique, and technique of the progressive variation (English version) is used.
