Double hyphen

Double hyphen

The double hyphen (English: double hyphen, ゠) is a hyphen expressed with two parallel lines. I am called the double hyphen (にじゅう hyphen). The length of the hyphen is half size width. I am often substituted in an equal sign (=) and the clogs sign (〓) of the mathematical character. It is two horizontal lines by the writing from left to right, but 90 degrees turns by the writing from top to bottom and becomes two bars.

I am used in Japanese and Ainu mainly. Even a European language may be rarely used in substitution for a hyphen and may be written in the upward slant to the right in some cases.

A letter prescribed in JIS X 0213:2004 is included in this item (in detail).

Use

Japanese

At the katakana notation of the word of foreign origin, I use it for the ends such as words. I often use it for a proper name.

Other language

  • It is spent for a person affix by Romaji notation of the Ainu.
  • When I started a new line by Western languages at the position of the hyphen, I may use it.
An example: When start a new line at the position of the hyphen in man-eater; usually
    man‐
    eater

となる. However, it becomes in the same way even if I start a new line and cannot distinguish maneater because a hyphen is inserted when I start a new line in the middle of a word. When there was not the big problem, but usually started a new line in the document which the close notation including the dictionary was expected from in man-eater even if I could not distinguish these
    man゠
    eater

I write と and may understand original notation.
