Career

I make my debut in the fourth all-Japan clubman race (two) of 1961 and win the championship at a 350cc class. I take the nickname of "the prodigy of Kansai" out of the overwhelming speed. Yamaha works enters it via so-called "Kenjiro school" (team of the Kenjiro Tanaka sponsorship affiliated with Honda), and it is participated in the war by a domestic race. I put the good grade including championship.

I leave Yamaha at the end of 1963 and transfer to Suzuki Works. I achieve full-scale participation in a war for the road race world championship (the world grand prix) from 1966 and get the world ranking second place in a 50cc class of 1967 (high-end as a Japanese rider). I left the results of many championships and winning prizes at 50cc, 125cc, but the activity by the world GP was finished because Suzuki was only for 1967, and it canceled world GP participation in a war.

It is in form to contract four-wheeled Mazda and two folds at time contracting with Suzuki and makes my debut for a four-wheeled race by the second Japan Grand Prix in 1964 (Mazda Carol). It was in the appearance that four-wheeled race activity in Mazda ran side by side with the world GP participation in sea basses, and was performed.

I devote myself to a four-wheeled race in Mazda after the end of 1960s and mainly play an active part in the overseas races of Europe or Southeast Asia. I drove the rotary engine car which Mazda just released and played a role indicating the high reliability of the rotary by endurance race in those days.

It is participated in the war in earnest from the end of 1969 by a race in Japan. By a rotary machine, I aim at Nissan, the Skyline GT-R overthrow that was the king of the touring car in those days. The driver of Mazda which assumed Katayama a leader origin caught up GT-R group while changing Familia rotary coupe, Capella, Mazda savanna RX-3 and a machine and overwhelmed GT-R at the end of 1972 (I drive three races of works GT-R into the cancellation).

In addition, I preside over two team "Kobe nuts" affiliated with Kawasaki from the end of 1960s. I bring up disciples such as Hideo Kanetani, Kazuyoshi Hoshino, Takazumi Katayama, the Rev. age Yasushi Mori.

I play an active part in the endurance race such as Fuji Grand champion race, formula races such as F2 and FJ1300 or FL500, Daytona 24 hours race or the 24, Le Mans time race afterwards. 従野孝司 of the younger brother (uterine younger brother) played an active part at a rotary of Mazda, too and was called rotary Brothers.

Mazda was about to decide the engine of the group C car for Le Mans with 3 rotor turbos, but Katayama makes a proposal saying "4 rotors, NA is advantageous from the durability and manageability". I tell that an opinion of Katayama was adopted by the interview of the magazine [2].

I played an active part as a top driver for a long time, but physical strength declined for a professional racing driver. I participated in GT300 from オークラロータリーレーシング in 1998, but was not able to leave the conspicuous grade.

After a retirement, I establish "Yoshimi Katayama promoter" and act as a president-director. The original product of the "KY-PROMOTOR" brand is under development, too. In addition, I act as a test driver in the new car development of Mazda and deal with upbringing of the Mazda office test driver and am active as a driver after a retirement.

It was revealed that I died on March 26, 2016 [1]. 75 years old death.

Episode

  • I am alienated by a stepfather (father of 従野孝司) saying "a meal to feed you is precious" and tell that a home environment was complicated in answer to the interview of the magazine. "The work that formed for きょうび, a life from the acquaintance wanted to be a racing rider when I talked saying I thought after graduation from junior high school "is there not any method to be able to die suddenly?", and an acquaintance "may die of the comings and goings that were loud if useless" saying a thing and reason "probability to die in motorcycle racers will be high" one time for five years" [3]. It was live-in and worked for a motorcycle shop and I rode a motorcycle every morning and loaded training in a gap of the Mt. Rokko (so-called "Rokko legend").
  • Because I started a good time than Shiro Ito who was an ace of Yamaha during Yamaha works being on the register roll, it is said that it followed that discord produces it with Ito and leaves the team.
  • When I participated in Isle of Man TT race as Suzuki Works rider, I challenge it and succeed in improvising for a former rear wheel drift run said to be impossibility other than Mike Hailwood in those days. I was played up with "the genius rider that I was alone for ten years" by the existing ground paper [the high level source required].
  • I performed hang off riding for a Japanese rider early, and it was blamed, "it is unorthodox" by Kenjiro Tanaka of the senior. However, it is said that Tanaka came to affirm riding of Katayama from the speed and the results of Katayama later.
  • At the time of the active play commented, "a Japanese sword was a naked sword, and was dignified but a journalist seems to stand" from the strong appearance like the bandit [4].
