Long s

Long s

ſ ſſſ Long s.svg

ſ It is one of は Roman letters and is the different form of the small letter of the 19th letter S of the alphabet. "ſ" is called long s (German: langes s, English: long s), s (English: medial s) of the center of a word for distinction with print (s) which became common after the 19th century. "s" is called short s (short s), round s (round s), s (terminal s) of the ending of a word for it. There is only a small letter in long s and the capital letter is equal to short s and is "S".

I am not used in the early 19th century from the late 18th century and was unified in "short s" (s), but integral calculus signs of the mathematics can confirm the trace.

Print

A part of the Bill of Rights. Each two characters of the ending of a word is S (Congreſs = Congress) and can compare print well.

I was extremely generally used as print of the S and was used in prefix, a word once. As a general rule, I used s which had a short it only by putting it in front of anteroposterior b, k of f before ending of a word, apostrophe. The word that is transcribed into sinfulness when express it only in short s when take English as an example with ſinfulneſs is transcribed. Furthermore, when it is the end of the root of a word of the compound word even if it is center of a word, I use s of the ending of a word, and, in German, the use is complicated more. The-shaped use in the ending of a word in such a word is similar to the sigma of Greek characters (the form in the word: σ, ending of a word form :ς).

Because I resemble F "f" of the small letter closely, and there is small tsukidashi with a cage, the style of handwriting, in addition, to strongly leave influence of the Fraktur for on the bar center left side, it is easy to confuse the print still more. It is S "ſ" where has a long it when it is F "f", and a horizontal line remains only on the left side when the right can go through a horizontal line or when a horizontal line does not exist.

History

s (bottom) of the Roman Empire flowing script

The flowing script of the ancient Roman age had the origin and was the form that greatly inclined to the right at first. The print came to be made perpendicularly afterwards at the about the end of eighth century when Karo ring my essay style was established [1].

In roman and the italic type, I was not gradually used in each place from the late 18th century through the early 19th century. I hung the change to orthography using short s exclusively in the U.K. and the United States of America in France in Spain in for 1795 through 1810 in 1782 through 1793 1760 through 1766 and occurred. I can vividly consider that this state compares the sixth edition with the fifth edition of "the Encyclopaedia Britannica". Refer to the image of the next gnarl "example". The contents is not changed, but all "ſ" is replaced with "s" and, in the page that I compared, show that I shifted to s having a short it totally at this time clearly.

This change did not happen by the Fraktur (German characters). I can see it with bottle labels of the Jaeger Meister routinely now.

Derivation sign

It was the origin of logotype "ß" (エスツェット, s sharp under an alias) used in German.

For 1,675 years, Gottfried Leibniz is an integral calculus sign from an initial of ſumma meaning a grand total in Latin I devised を [2]. The shape of the sign enlarged italic type (ſ) of long s for a long time lengthwise.

"ſ" was used as abbreviation of schilling in the U.K. and I transformed it with "/" and came to be called shilling mark (shilling mark). The shilling mark is identified with a slash now [3].
