Christmas cantata

Christmas cantata

The Christmas cantata (Une Cantate de Noël) is the last work of Swiss composer Arthur Honegger.

Table of contents

Process of the composition

Originally this music seemed to be the Passion play that I came up with the idea of in about 1945, but was not completed in the form called the Passion play. And I was largely late, and completed a planned date with this work and, in 1953 when Honegger who had already suffered from a heart trouble had own death close at hand, passed away in 1955.

Premiere

On December 18, 1953, I was given the first public performance in Basel by Paul Sacher conduct, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Derrick Olsen (baritone), Basel room chorus.

Formation

A baritone solo, a child chorus (but unison), mixed chorus, flute 2 (substitute 1 that I beat and pay a piccolo) oboe 2, clarinet 2, bassoon 2, horn 4, trumpet 3, trombone 3, a harp, string music five copies, an organ. In addition, there is never the part sounding by all complete ensembles that I include all the solo, the chorus, the orchestral music, the organs. All ensembles only for orchestral musics are slightly seen in a postlude.

Summary of the work

French, German, Latin is used for the text like Swiss Honegger.

The whole is greatly divided into three, and it is thought like a "Christ birth" "paean" in "the dark times". However, it needs to be thought that I rearrange this in the background in the times like a "war" "peace" "human being paean".

The beginning, an organ let being heavy and a dissonance sound. A cello works fragmentarily, and fearful ヴォカリーズ emerges for a chorus. This part is regarded as strange E minor. A male voice sings "デ professional feces D" (De Profundis) solemnly while a woodwind instrument intertwines with each other and is delivered to a woman's voice. However, it becomes ヴォカリーズ again and I quicken speed a little and swell with a fanfare. When cut down on speed on a top, and is sorrowful, and cry "the next sauce!"; of A major strange a child chorus is calm, and sing with a nursery rhyme-like melody. When this reply is repeated, it becomes the baritone solo, and, as for "Son of God, it is birth 給 collar" and a bright part to accept が outcome, a chorus than a hymn "root of Essai" for a child chorus before long. This part is E major. This reply continues for a while, too and becomes the slightly dance music-like part of strange A major. It is the part which is full of the complexity that I throw speed on last joke, ロ major key, and six-fourths beat and eighteen-eighths beat affect at the same time, and hymn "Silent Night" sounds. As for this part, French mixes with German. Following a baritone solo, the one in the child chorus plays "the voice of the angel". Baritone sings "the glow rear", and I quicken speed, and a chorus sings in C major loudly saying "applaud a master!". A choral of Philip Nicolai (Philipp Nicolai) that "there is a voice to call for waking", and Bach used に the cantata 140th is used as counterpoint in this part. When I sing, and a chorus delivers it, an organ and a trumpet echo magnificently and gradually become quiet. And I follow an opening chord adversely, and an organ disappears calmly while recollecting the piece of the melody which came out so far.
