Story
During the Pacific War, naval worn-out transportation warship "bucket issue" is the stage. Roberts (Henry Fonda) beginning crew of the first mate lived life that they continued enduring the harsh training of the captain by boredom with the autocratic captain without being able to participate in the front.
It anchors in the place where there is a peek with the change of clothes of WAVE (woman navy soldier) by chance at a port of call. WAVE will observe the warship, and the pal bar (Jack Lemmon) manages it to give them surgical spirit (and in the disguise of whiskey). But, by the clumsiness of the pal bar, a peek act comes out to WAVE and becomes all nothing.
When I say to arrive at the next port of call, Roberts raises a tiff with the captain and is going to start request for transfer of a census register, but presses the captain to admit the temporary landing of the crew in exchange for a condition to say, "I will not defy the captain at all in future again without starting request for transfer of a census register". It is the captain admitting it, but crew who goes ashore, and was in high spirits wake up a jealous quarrel, and the shore leave is canceled after all without passing overnight.
Crew turn antipathy to Roberts who has become a tool of the captain afterward. Roberts who lost a place to stay to a warship throws away the potted plant of the palm which the captain loves for revenge alone in the sea. The captain who takes an emergency call in the middle of the night. However, crew know that it was Roberts that let shore leave appear through it and the captain admits transfer of a census register.
A bright letter arrives from Roberts to the Baru bar others crew in a few minutes. But a piece of paper was attached to the letter. It was written to the piece of paper that Roberts was killed in action by the kamikaze attack of the Japanese military.
