転用されたクハ21201は通学ラッシュ時の増結用として運用され、当時半鋼製車体の1201形で統一されていた貴志川線では、唯一の全金属車体を有する車両であった。

しかし、沿線の人口減少やマイカー普及で乗客が減少したことから3両運転は中止となり、クハ21201は1986年(昭和61年)に廃車されている。廃車に際しては車体が新しいことを利用して、この車体を実際に衝突転覆障害の際に生じる車体破損の実証実験に用い、社内で使用する技術データの収集を行ったのち、解体となった。
