The Gabriel mouton (Gabriel Mouton, from 1618 to September 28, 1694) is a scientist in French Catholic priests of the 17th century. I took a theological degree in Lyon, but left achievements for mathematics and astronomy.

In book Observationes diametrorum solis et lunae apparentium of 1760, I suggested the later metric unit of length that he/she led. Based on the measurement of the size of the earth which went of リッチョーリ of Bologna, I suggested unit of length to be made from the meridian arc head equivalent to for northing one minute. The unit that I suggested of mouton assumes length of meridian one minute milliare and does decuria, 1/1000 with lower than virga virgula, decima, centesima, millesima in centuria1/100 in 1/10.

Length milliare of meridian one minute was how to decide same as a current nautical mile, and I received it soon, and unit of 1/1000 virga was easy to be broken into by unit of length Parisian toise (approximately 1.95m) of Paris at the time.

The mouton suggested that I decided a standard of the realistic length with a period of a pendulum (it is difficult that precision is good and finds short length from astronomical observation) for reasons of the practical use top.

These ideas were supported by Jean Piccard and Huygens and were considered in the British Royal Society. Similar suggestion was accomplished by Leibniz. After 100 years or more, weights and measures Committee of the French scientific academy decided to demand a standard of the length from size of the earth, and a definition of the length was adopted in France in 1791.

Even the determination of diameter of the sun and a triangle function table, the production of the table of logarithms are known.
