Nontuberculous acid fast bacterium

It is named tuberculosis mycol. and the cultivable acid fast bacterium except the bacillus of leprosy group generally with) a nontuberculous acid fast bacterium (ひけっかくせいこうさんきん, non-tuberculous mycobacteria; NTM, mycobacteria other than tuberculosis, MOTT) [¹] [²]. Bacteriological characteristic

Molecular biology develops and can classify it about the genetic property and metabolism of bacteria by DNA and RNA definitely now. However, I was able to ever classify bacteria only by using difference in growth by a nutrient medium, the culture temperature, difference in metabolism of the chemical substance. Therefore a tubercle bacillus and a bacillus of leprosy were typical acid fast bacteria, and other acid fast bacteria were considered to be the special acid fast bacterium which was a non-fixed form. Because it was molecular biologic, and many acid fast bacteria would be classified with technical development, and rather tuberculosis mycol. and bacillus of leprosy group were special bacteria, and it became clear that so-called "non-fixed form acid fast bacterium" had the general property as the acid fast bacterium, I came to be called "a nontuberculous acid fast bacterium".

• Brook nutrient medium

  When culture it on a brook nutrient medium using a niacin test, color development varies according to the kind of the acid fast bacterium [⁵]; [⁶]. The tubercle bacillus uses that a niacin-producing Noh is expensive.

Pathogenic

In the Homo sapiens, either organ of the whole body may be transmitted, but most are the infectious diseases in the lungs when it is not fence-sitting infection practically. The infection power is weak, and it is thought that infection from the soil is important. It is said that there is hardly human → human infection.

When it is the fence-sitting infectious disease in the immunodeficiency state, the disseminated nontuberculous acid-fast bacterial disease with the whole body may develop. In late years the skin nontuberculous acid-fast bacterial disease which is not leprosy is confirmed in Japan (by Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium peregrinum); [⁷].

Inspection

The culture in the nutrient medium takes time and cannot tell the difference between M. avium and M. intracellulare again, and there is a point inferior to classification ability. However, use inspection using DNA/RNA such as the PCR methods together now because the drug resistance cannot distinguish it when is not culture [⁸]; [⁹].
