GDDR3
GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate 3) is a memory technology for the video card developed by ATI Technologies.
They resembled DDR2 SDRAM technically, but the electricity and the condition of the heat radiation were relaxed to be equipped with high-speed memory chip, and to grind cooling means simply. Unlike DDR2, GDDR3 is unrelated to the DDR3 SDRAM specifications of the JEDEC. This memory comprises a terminator inside to handle a demand of the graphic surely. In addition, the GDDR3 memory transfers 2 bits because of one period of clock signal to widen a bandwidth.
GDDR3 was developed by ATI, but the product which I adopted was GeForce 5700 Ultra of NVIDIA first, and the product which I secondly adopted was GeForce 6800 Ultra of NVIDIA. This is to hold down power consumption at the same level with GeForce 5950 Ultra of the previous generation. ATI adopted GDDR3 from RADEON X 800. After that I was used with many products of these two major camp. I shift to GDDR4 of the succeeding standard afterwards. New standard GDDR5 is announced now from AMD (ATI) in 2009, and a deployment product is released.
Adoption example with the game console
The following is a use example except the video card.
- I am used for memory for the PlayStation 3 - graphic of the Sony computer entertainment. The main storage device is XDR DRAM.
- I do not limit it graphically and am equipped with Xbox 360 - use of Microsoft 512 megabytes as a system memory.
- I put one GDDR3 tip on Wii - main memory of Nintendo.
