Crosscutting
The crosscutting (cross-cutting) is editing technique of the movies which brings dramatic impacts such as a sense of reality or the feeling of strain by tying each shot in turn about the scenes more than two that are up at the same time at a different place [1]. I say parallel montage. "The wound life of the citizen of country of D, W Griffith," this technique is used in the assassination scenes of "the godfather" of Francis Ford Coppola.
Call the thing which I tied the plural events that happened at different time to with a semantic continuity in turn with parallel editing [1], and novel direction described in a common theme that four stories to have at the times and the place that were different in "in tolerance" (1916) are non-tolerant in turn has it stolen.
In the film history, it is said that crosscutting was used by American film "Great Train Robbery" of 1903 for the first time, but "Great Train Robbery" is comprised in all 14 scenes and is a work photographed in the one scene one-shot which is typical by the movie at the time. However, the crosscutting joins a shot and a shot together in turn, and it cannot be said that "Great Train Robbery" used this technique for the first time. But there is a scene drawing two scenes on multiply, and I change in being a work described in parallel editing for the first time, and there is not it.
Cutback
The editing technique that the cutback (cutaway / cutback) handles shots more than two in turn. The cutback connects scene A and scene B with a continuity of the time, and a meaning is different from the crosscutting to tie scene A and scene B to multiply.
Flashback
Technique that the flashback (Flashback) connects many short shots (about two top degree) momentarily and brings a visual effect. I was used in "the white rose of the railroad line" of Abel Gance effectively, and Daisuke Ito and others made full use of this technique in the Japanese movie world. In addition, I break the time continuity of the story progressing for flashback, and there is the meaning called the technique to show a past scene. In this case, what was used is famous for "Citizen Kane" of Orson Welles, and even the scenes of the wake of the "living" の dead chief character of Akira Kurosawa are used.
