The Idesia polycarpa (Idesia polycarpa, a scientific name: Idesia polycarpa) is fallen leaves Takagi of the willow family (considered to be Idesia polycarpa department by the conventional classification including the クロンキスト system). I am told that the origin of the Japanese name "Idesia polycarpa" wrapped a meal in a leaf in old days. Because fruit resembles a nandin, I say ナンテンギリ (nandin paulownia). The only kind of the Idesia polycarpa genus.

Distribution

I am distributed over Japanese (Honshu and to the south) Korea, China, Taiwan [¹].

Form

The mignonette that the bark is smooth at height of the tree 8-21m, trunk diameter around 50cm. The chute has big marrow in grayish brown. The leaf is 8-20cm in length, 7-20cm in width with each other life, the branch earlier bunch-related heart form that does it, and is wide like a drill and Mallotus japonicus. As for the table, bottle green, the back are whitish. There are coarse saw teeth in the edge. The leafstalk is long with 4-30cm, and is red; toward the point with one pair of nectary (but this point is similar to Mallotus japonicus as for the nectary in the root of the blade). I flower for 4-5 these past months. The flower is yellowish green small, and there is a fragrance and does a panicle of 13-30cm that I hung down like the bunch of the grape. There is not the petal, and the number of sepal does not maintain the same with around five pieces. As for the male flower, as for 12-16mm in diameter, the female flower, an ovary is higher at 9mm in dioecism. The male flower has a large number of stamens, and there is the stamen which degenerated to a female flower. The fruit is 5-10mm in diameter in sap fruit. It becomes the dark purplish red from orange when I become ripe and includes a brown seed of large number of 2-3mm. The fruit is left after fallen leaves for a long time, and attract attention in a long distance well [¹]; [²] [³].

Use

As for the fruit, omophagia is possible and I process it and may be eaten [⁴].

Because a large number of red fruit becoming ripe in winter from autumn is beautiful, as a tree for the admiration, even other temperate zone levels including Europe are cultivated [²]. I am used for flower arrangement and decoration. There is the kind of the white fruit, too.
