Curl Fontana (Carl Fontana, from July 18, 1928 to October 9, 2003) is an American jazz musician. A trombonist.

Origin

I am born as Louisiana Monroe on July 18, 1928. I learned jazz from father who was the musician of a sax and the violin and might appear in the band of father during high school attendance at school. I entered the Louisiana University Monroe school and moved to Louisiana State University after having gone to the school for two years and I acquired a bachelor's degree of the music pedagogy and graduated afterwards.

I appear in (1951), the band of Woody Herman as a substitute of アービー Green who is regular in the next year of the graduation and start full-scale professional activity. A technique of the improvisation was appreciated then by Woody Herman and was able to stay as a regular member after アービー Green returned to the band.

After having belonged to the band of Woody Herman for three years, Fontana joins the band of Lionel Hampton in 1954 and participates in the band of Stan Kenton afterwards. I participate in three pieces of albums in the band of Stan Kenton and achieve chi winding and the costarring that belonged to the band.

Fontana comes to be known as the soloist who is like lyricism, and is original as I handle many tours and recording with these bands. The place tile which he flowed through was greatly different from the style of the conventional jazz trombonist including J J Johnson and Frank Rosolino. Particularly, the how to play called "Doe dollar tonguing" to be able to be called his pronoun was praised highly by much ジャズトロンボニスト. This how to play enabled what I played in the fast tempo thought not to be able to play it with the slide trombone till then smoothly.
