Characteristic

A shrub [1] of the evergreen nature. Approximately 6mm in length, the tip are divided into five slices with bell form, and the corolla opens with white evenly each. When diameter 4mm ripens with a sphere in stone fruit, the fruit turns red.

The Japanese name is like the thing coming from a dialect name of Okinawa. This name is used in Amami, 沖永良部, Okinawa Island, and the similar name is informed by the various places throughout Okinawa ウクマンギ and ククマンギ, フクマン as well as it [2].

Distribution and growth environment

It is in Ryukyu Islands from Oshima, Amami and to the south in Japan and is distributed over Chinese southern part, Taiwan, Malaysia, India any place other than Japan [3]. There is many it near the low land particularly the shore [4].

Classification

The congeneric seed has several kinds including the Styrax japonica in Japan, but it is all to Takagi, and it is only this kind that is a shrub.

Use

The root has sweetness and is used as folk medicine in India and the Philippines. But the efficacy is not reliable [5].

I make fruit edible and can use the leaf in substitution for tea again. But it is often cultivated for admiration further in Okinawa. I am used as a hedge and a garden tree, but become the short hedge because height of the tree does not become higher. There is the example to bring up for the underbrush of the roadside tree. In addition, I am used for bonsai use [6].
