A vanguard photograph (ぜんえいしゃしん) is generally an avant-garde photograph.
But, in the history of Japanese photograph, I often mean the avant-garde photograph expression that receives the sudden rise of the new photograph from the 1920s through the 1930s, and occurred from the late 1930s through the early 1940s.
The vanguard photograph in this meaning greatly catches the influence of surrealism and the abstract picture (abstract art) and is established. For a concrete photographer, beginnings include Ryuichi Amano of "丹平写真倶楽部", Teru Hirai seven of "the avant-garde contrasting group" including the Ueda detailed mountain, Hanawa silver me, Yoshio Tarui, Minoru Sakata, Tsugio Tajima, Kansuke Yamamoto of "the Nagoya photo avant-garde" including Koro Honjo, Wataru Takahashi, Hisa Kuno of "ソシエテ イルフ" including Keiichiro Goto, Konomi Giichiro, Kazunaga Nagata, Shigeru Imai (from 1910 to 1991 to be now, and to grow thick) of "the vanguard photograph association" including Hitori Yoshizaki, 他瑛九 including Nobuya Abe (あべのぶや, from 1913 to 1971) in Kiyoshi Koishi of "the wave sinter photograph club".
A photomontage, a photogram (photosketch, automatic gram), solarization, "blurring" often use the technique such as close-ups technically.
With strong control (the avant-garde art is threatening) for a start of the Pacific War and the photograph expression with it, the vanguard photograph of this time was extremely over in a short life. Therefore a vanguard photograph of this time does not directly connect it to postwar photograph expression and will wait for "a reevaluation" after some time.
