Geography

It is politics, economy of Ugo-machi, the center of the culture, and the Bon festival dance of Nishimonai that is named the three major Bon festival dance in Japan is held every year in summer. Nishimonai Station of the Ugo Kotsu Ogachi Line was established before, but it is now in an abolished line, and nearest JR Station is Yuzawa Station of Ou Main Line. It is at the position of approximately 10 kilometers to the west from Yuzawa Station. River

History

A center of current Nishimonai was a place called a village in front of Nishimonai in the Edo era, and there was 西馬音内堀廻村 in the upper reaches along the Nishimonai River (horse sound river). There was the Nishimonai castle which was a castle of Onodera who ruled over the whole area until just before that in 堀廻村 in the Edo era. 堀廻村 is a form called so-called foot (the foot) village which is equivalent to the pivotal position of the fan when I form an alluvial fan when Nishimonai River flows out from the mountains, and the former village is equivalent to the form called so-called village built in the mouth of a valley that there was in the mouth which a valley appeared from the mountain around a market for business of the people of the mountainous district and people of villages. Origin of the place name

The origin of Nishimonai seems to be Ainu, but there are many opinions, and there is not the established theory. It is said that Ney (nay) of the Ainu means a river and is a word to be seen in the place name of the wide example including Hokkaido. We have an opinion that it was "にしまおんない" in the ancient times. Lion dance I of Komatsu
