X3D is file format to express the XML-based three-dimensional computer graphics which ISO established and is a successor of the VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). X3D covers expansion (e.g., Humanoid Animation, NURBS, GeoVRML) of the VRML functionally and not only I encode the scene using a sentence structure of the XML, but also the sentence structure of the Open Inventor style of VRML97 is possible, too and expands API.

Standardization

I define some profiles for various uses in X3D, e.g., there are X3D Core, X3D Interchange, X3D CAD, X3D Geospatial, X3D Immersive. In addition, the browser developer defines the original expansion and can submit it to Web3D consortium for standardization.

I call a subset of X3D XMT-A and become one of the derivation of XMT defining in MPEG-4 Part 11. This is designed to provide the rink of X3D and 3D contents (BIFS) in the MPEG-4.

ISO approved the basic specifications (ISO/IEC 19775) of X3D in 2004. I approved the encoding (ISO/IEC 19776) of XML in X3D and the VRML in 2005 [¹].

Applied

There is already some application and most parse X3D file by paying own expenses by open-source software and interpret it. For example, there are 3D-Graphics and editor Blender of the animation, virtual world client Project Wonderland of Sun Microsystems. However, I have not yet adopted it in Second Life without it having possibilities to be said that I was accepted widely either.
