Roswell (Roswell) is county seat in a city located in the southeastern part, the Chavez county of United States of America New Mexico.

According to the national census of 2005, the population is the city that is big to the fifth of New Mexico in 45,199 people. It is the center of irrigation agriculture, dairy farming, a ranch, manufacturing industry, merchandising and the oil production. It is a stronghold of New Mexico officer training university (NMMI) founded in 1891. The bitter lake Kunisada sanctuary is located along the pekoe river of several miles of northeast of the city.

Roswell is known to the world now by the name being prefixed it for the case called "the Roswell UFO case" that occurred in 1947. But it was a place of approximately 75 miles from Roswell, and the real crash point was rather near the town of the corona. Still the investigation and the collection of the wreckage were dealt with by local Roswell army airport.

History

The settler of the local first non-indigenous people around Roswell was a group of pioneers who came from Missouri. They tried to settle to 15 miles of southwest of the point with current Roswell in 1865, but couldn't but abandon the point because water lacked.

In 1869, Aaron Wilburn of the partner of businessman station wagon C Smith and him from Nebraska Omaha built the building of two アドベ bricks in the place of current Roswell. Station wagon C Smith was Roswell Smith who was a well-known lawyer of Indiana Lafayette and a son of daughter Annie L Worth of United States of America Director-General of the Patent Office Henley リーヴィット L Worth. Two buildings were helpful as a trade place, a general shop, a post office of the community and a lodging.

In 1871, Smith applied to the federal government for a right of the land around the building, and, on August 20, 1873, he became the first postmaster of this town. Generally, this day sees a date and the historian of the official start of Roswell as the city. He called this town Roswell for first name of his father.

Originally Roswell belonged to the Lincoln county, but belongs to the Chavez county after 1887. The New Mexico Roswell post office uses ZIP cord 88201.

In 1877, captain, Joseph Calloway Lee bought a right of the land of Smith, and father of Lee-in-law, W W Weill D major purchased the land of Wilburn and two other settlers one year later. The Weill D donates these to his daughter, Surrey Weill D - Lee; most of Roswell neighboring land of the Lees became owned. The Lees maintained peace and order during the Lincoln county war (1877-1879) and did Roswell in the area more stable than other most towns of the southeastern part of New Mexico at the time.

A large-scale aquifer was discovered at the land of ネイザン ジャッファ near the town, ジャッファ ranch in 1891. It followed that the discovery of this water source let the first big growth and development in this area accelerate. When a railroad was laid through a town in 1893, the growth continued.

Roswell is known by the technical study of the liquid promotion rocket performed by Robert H Goddard. Goddard came to Roswell in earlier period of 1930s and performed many experiments to raise the field of rocket studies.

During World War II, a prisoner of war camp was put in orchard Park nearby. The German prisoner of war was employed for main infrastructure maintenance of Roswell such as the pavement of the embankment of the north spring river. Some captives made the outline of the iron cross in the building stones which covered the embankment of the northern coast using building stones of the different size. The iron cross has been covered later in a layer of the thin concrete. In the 1980s, crew of the riverbed cleaning removed concrete and exposed the outline once again. Then the small park which was to the south immediately of the iron cross came to be known as an iron cross park. On November 11, 1996, this park was changed the name from to POW/MIA park (prisoner of war, missing person Park). This park displays a fragment of Berlin Wall donated to the Roswell city by Luftwaffe.

In the early 1980s, transportation manufacturing corporation (TMC) of the major bus production founded a factory in Roswell. This factory repeated resumption and closedown and caused periodic vibration of the unemployment rate. TMC has stopped bus production. NOVA Bass PLC produced buses using the same building, but this was closed, too. This plant was reopened in 2003 by millennium transit サーヴィシズ company.

In 2002, Roswell was appointed in U.S. city prize for recovery from closedown of the Walker Air Force Base mainly.

Roswell is located in 33°23'14" N 104°31'41" W / 33.38722 degrees N 104.52806 degrees W / 33.38722, -104.52806.

According to United States of America Bureau of the Census, the total area of the city is 75.0 km2 (29.0 mi2). 75.0 km2 (28.9 mi2) of those is land, and 0.1 km2 (0.04m2) is Suichi (0.07%).
