Pierre ポワブル

Pierre ポワブル (Pierre Poivre, from August 23, 1719 to January 6, 1786) is a French propagator, horticulturist. I promoted cultivation of the fragrance in the island of the French possession of the Indian Ocean and became the etymology of name, ポワヴリエ (Poivrier) of the French pepper.

Life

I was born in Lyon. 20s acted on Cochin-China and Guangzhou, the Far East including Macao as a propagator. I became a member of the French East India Company in 1745 and, in the middle of the voyage of the East Indies, was rolled up in the sea fight with the British ship and received shrapnel on a wrist and lost a part of the right arm. I became current Mauritius of the Indian Ocean and a warden of Re'union in 1760. I prepared the botanical garden into this time, Mauritius. I am known in those days by having introduced cultivation of the fragrance such as a clove (clove) or the nutmeg which the Netherlands monopolized into Mauritius and Re'union. I let a secret bring in seeds from the East Indies to break a monopoly of Netherlands. I performed an exploration trip for collection of the fragrance from 1769 through 1770. I became a person in charge of the fragrance cultivation in Seychelles. I came back to France in 1772 and died in Lyon.

The botanical garden which ポワブル made of Mauritius is left as a current bread pull mousse botanical garden. The name of ポワブル is left for the name of the Mauritian atoll.
