Form
76-89cm in total length. Wing expanse 110-122cm. It is an origin of the Japanese name it is not what a whole body is covered with a black feather with the luster and limited to this kind, but to be seen like a crow.
The color of the bill is light gray.
A whole body is a brown feather, and the young bird is covered. The skin which the face which the bill base included does not have a feather, and is red is exposed in the summer, and the fame (I looked red red-faced =) is derived. A top of the head and a feather of the occiput perform extension (longer plumes on a bird's head), and a white spot enters the hind leg base again (summer feather). A face is covered with a feather in the winter season, and the longer plumes on a bird's head become indistinct, too (eclipse plumage).
Habits
I inhabit the reef shore.
The eating habit eats fish in animal food mainly.
The breeding form is oviparous. I make the nest which put the branch of dry grass and the tree together at the cliff of the shore and lay 1-4 eggs in 5-6 once a month. Brood it with the sex; an incubation period is approximately 21 days. The young bird leaves the nest for approximately two months after hatching.
with the human being of relationships
The number of the habitation decreases by the approach to the breeding place of the person, the predation of an egg and the young bird by オオセグロカモメ which increased. The number of nesting pairs decreases sharply in Japan after the 1980s, and I nested before in the Cape falling rock of Hokkaido, but the nest building is not confirmed now. I am appointed in domestic rare nature animals and plants foundation with a preservation sermon line of the kind in 1993.
