Geography

In a city area located in the central part of Yahatahigashi-ku, National highway No. 3 goes along the north side of the district to the east and west. Old street with a car track (Fukuoka prefectural road 50 Yawata Tobata Line) and Yamanote Dori go along the center of the district to the east and west.

In a district, it is the district that there are Yawata Chuo-ku mall, a bank, the post office which ever prospered as Monzen-cho of the Yawata ironworks "east gate", and is lively in the ward led by the administrative facilities such as Yahatahigashi-ku government offices.

Nishitetsu Kitakyushu Line is open until the section abolition of (1992) in 1992 and is called Chuoucho (I wait for the center) once because "Chuoucho streetcar stop" existed.

History

Originally here was Edamitsu-mura of Chikuzen country Onga-gun, a domain of Ogura-mura. When Edamitsu-mura, Okura-mura, Ogura-mura merge in (1889) in 1889, and Yawata village is formed, here becomes part, too. The Yawata village became Hachimancho in (1899) in 1899.

It is Yawata ironwork that this ground was a chance to develop. When Yawata ironworks are built in (1901) in 1901 by Higashida, here will show turnout very much as "company town" of the Yawata iron manufacture.

Yawata high elementary school (current Kitakyusyu City central junior high school) was founded in (1902) in 1902 of the next year, and it was moved to the current position as "Yawata primary school" (current Kitakyusyu City Yahata Elementary School), and 岡東小学校 which Higashida had again came to have the role as the local center in the education.

Higashihoncho - Daizo River section of Nishitetsu Kitakyushu Line (Kitakyusyu Main Line) was inaugurated in (1911) in 1911, and a streetcar came to run here. Chuo-ku - Edamitsu station square section of the Edamitsu Line was inaugurated in (1923) in 1923, and, in "the Chuoucho streetcar stop," it was in a transfer station as a node with Kitakyusyu Main Line and the Edamitsu line.

"The Kyushu department store" opened in (1932) in 1932. The Kyushu department store was destroyed by fire by war damage and closed a shop in (1971) in 1971 although the affiliation of the complete set of Kyoto increased it after the war and made a start as "Yawata complete set".

There was the name called "Chuo-ku, Yawata-shi", but it is about till then in postwar 1960 that "Chuoucho" as the place name was born (1960). Sanno became independent in (1971) in 1971 and I annexed Okura, a part of Ogura more and became the current "center" afterwards.

When Sunatsu - Kurosakiekimae section of Nishitetsu Kitakyushu Line was abolished Edamitsu Line in 1992 in (1985) for the next 1,985 years, the streetcar stop was abolished, too.

Special event

  • By a festival to celebrate the company of Yawata ironworks at this time of the company festival -1901 year, it is performed in Otani baseball stadium of central 2 on about November 3. Many people gather in the Chuoucho whole area on the day.
  • A festival to be held in July in Yawata Gion, Chuo sedge hat with ornaments - every year. 4.7 meters in height, a sedge hat with ornaments more than 2 tons in weight with "hey Sir, the shout of オイサー" of men around the town [2]. Originally preservation society called "blue shade society" carries the preservation of the festival by a certain festival now from prewar days [2].

Traffic

  • National highway No. 3 penetrates a district to the east and west. It is traveled around 12 of them an hour and frequence a route bus of Nishitetsu bus Kitakyusyu including the Nishitetsu Kitakyushu Line substitute bus in an old street with a car track, and the convenience to transportation is good because around three an hour express buses, Nishitetsu いとうづ binding Fukuoka-shi center and Kitakyusyu together again stops.
