Origin

Is located along the bank of the Tama River, Kokubunji cliff line, and it is said in the official name with "影光山仏性院大毘廬遮那殿善養密寺" (ようこうさんぶっしょういんだいびるしゃなでんぜんようみつじ), and 善養寺 belonging to the Shingon Buddhism intellect mountain group is a subordinate temple of the intellect product House of Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto-shi [5]; [6]. This Japanese nutmeg grows it in a female in front of the main hall of a Buddhist temple of 善養寺, and, as for the height of the tree, 22.6 meters, the circumference of the trunk reach 5.3 meters [7]. Receive strong south wind from the Tama River, and incline to the north side in the whole, and the way of branch lengthens to the north, too, but the figure of the willow のようにしだらせた tree is elegant in the branch for the lower half [4]; [7] [8].

About the process that this Japanese nutmeg was planted, there is the following tradition. When the daughter of the powerful family which ruled this ground happened to pass by along the Tama River, I met parent and child of the swamp crab. I begged "a river overflowed, and in this situation we were washed down, and please can I not miss us tonight?" and a daughter for the pro-crab. The daughter took the request and let parent and child of the swamp crab go to the hill. Large rain fell in the evening, and the Tama River overflowed according to the words of the pro-crab as expected. Parent and child of the swamp crab visited the daughter and left the fruit of the Japanese nutmeg of sole thanks にと one afterwards. When a daughter sowed the fruit in the hill, I grew up to the excellent Japanese nutmeg before long. This Japanese nutmeg linked many fruits every other year, and came to help farmers of the neighboring villages that suffered from the flooding of the Tama River [1]; [9] [10].

Early in the Edo era, this Japanese nutmeg has already become the big tree. A Buddhist priest called 祐栄阿闍梨 (go-between 5 年遷化) which was in 善養寺 of the Fukazawa village loaded study at the House of intellect product of Motoyama and came back to the Fukazawa village at that time. However, 善養寺 went to ruin in absence of 祐栄. It is informed that 祐栄 moved the temple to Shimonoge-mura [11] with this Japanese nutmeg afterwards [2]. About the move of 善養寺 in "forming anew Musashi topographical record article" 巻之四十八, an article of Ebara county Setagaya territory Sugakari Shiyoge Noge-mura with the description of so [6]. But there are not documents, and, about 善養寺 before the move, is hardly known [5]; [6].

By the existence of this Japanese nutmeg, 善養寺 is called by another name called "a Japanese nutmeg temple" [6]. On November 21, 1964, was appointed by a natural monument of Tokyo [4]; [6]. There is a cavity as a child can go in and out of the root at approximately 2 meters approximately 50 centimeters, height width at the maximum, and a rest-in-peace pagoda is enshrined in that [1]; [4] [10] [9]. Even if there is a cavity, I do the root swelling well and am full of the growing power of a tree [9]. The chief priest of 善養寺 gives a tree beer or liquor left by a Buddhist memorial service in addition to fertilization such as the seedcake of the winter season to follow this growing power of a tree [9].

Even if it is late years, the fruit of the Japanese nutmeg attaches a fruit every other year, and the harvest amounts than 100 kilograms in the year of the good harvest [9]. That the fruit which I harvested is sent to a Japanese sweet manufacturer of Sado-shi, Niigata after having aired it, and it becomes the delicious bean cake of the sugar cliff, and I am offered by a guest of 善養寺 [9]. In the garden of 善養寺, is named for this tree "大榧苑" [1]; [8].
