Distribution

Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, - - including Kyushu - - Tsushima, Yakushima, Tanegashima) [1], China, Korea, Taiwan [2].

Characteristic

The imago is a large insect with 40mm in length, 100mm in length of right and left that widened a feather and this kind. I live mainly on the sap of broadleaf trees such as Japanese oaks. I have a milky-white feather. In the point that is a feather bigger than a body, the power that a mandible greatly bites in the insects similar to the mayfly is strong. The monocular base is black. The origin named the dobsonfly of the Japanese name likened a habit to bite in a mandible to a snake and attached it.

The larva is an aquatic insect living in the mountain stream, and the body is slim, and the head is firm, and a chin strongly develops. A twin gills foot leaves every metamere in the abdomen.

Life cycle

Because the larvae inhabit upstream from a basin generally in a clean river, it is one of the indicator organisms of the quality of the water that is cool and clear like many kinds to belong to stone fly eyes or water moth eyes. When there is this one larva in strong flesh-eating, I am called the river centipedes from a reason, the figure even if other aquatic insects disappear from all around. There is power as I swell when bitten, but the poison does not last like a centipede. I crawl on the occasion of coarctation ashore and crawl into the up, the bottom of the stone of the bank part, and it is a pupa. In addition, I am said to be it when a mandible develops to a pupa and works as some pupas together when there is the habit that bites it between friends, and kills it.

Imagos come flying for a light well.

Use

The larva is called Larva of Protohermes grandis (まごたろうむし) for a long time and becomes the folk medicine working for of the child. Once of Saikawa of Shiroishi-shi, Miyagi was said that was made specially in it, and the native warmed this in the Edo era, and had snacks [3]. I was peddled in an official notice voice of "Taro Son made specially in Saikawa, Oshu" until the 1930s [4].

In addition, in the neighborhood of Ina-shi, Nagano, I grind a larva if edible as delicacy のざざむしの one kind.
