Life

  • On February 19, 1876, I am born in ホビツァ of the ゴルジュ prefecture of the Oltenia district (western half of the straw Kia district) in southwestern Romania.
  • I learn art from 1894 through 1898 in an arts and crafts school in クラヨヴァ of the straw Kia district.
  • After having learned art from 1898 through 1901 in national Beaux-Arts of Bucharest, I engage in carpentering for a while in a hometown.
  • In 1904, I enter Paris Beaux-Arts and learn a sculpture. I was affected by Auguste Rodin these days.
  • In 1907, I work in a studio of Rodin for several months. The work which is a turning point to abstraction produces "a praying person".
  • In 1908, the "kiss" series, production of the "my Astra" series start. I left the realistic method and reached the abstract work of the form which was extremely homogeneous, and was pure.
  • I exhibit it at exhibition "アーモリーショー" to introduce the latest European art to in the United States in 1913.
  • In 1924, I produce the masterpiece "Bird in Space" series and start.
  • On March 16, 1957, I die in Paris.

A work and person

I have the style that at a glance is minimal that cut down an element very much. In addition, I produce the pedestal which sculptures are put as a work together. As for the work of ブランクーシ, abstraction advances, and, with "newborn baby" and "Bird in Space which are a masterpiece," the head and the bird which is going to fly of the infant reach hardly simple ovoid and the propeller-shaped form. But I catch the essence of the object of the description and copy it into a simple form effectively, and his work is not the thing which completely leaves the form of the object.

Because I am considered to be industrial products without being considered to be artworks at the customs, and a high duty has been imposed on me for such a simplification when I exported "Bird in Space" to the United States of America for work sale in 1926, the customs compete in a trial with a buyer and have the case that a buyer finally wins the case.

The original work of ブランクーシ had a great influence to later modern sculpture, picture, design. The "infinity pillar" series which is a masterpiece in particular is constituted by the repetition of the simple unit, and it is said that I do not lose an infinite characteristic that I focus even if I cut it where in the place that the person talked about to Man Ray of the friend. This thought had influence that I was strong in minimal art such as Carl Andre.

ブランクーシ was loved by artless personality by various artists, and friendship fitted Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. Deschamps had the time when I lived by buying and selling a work of ブランクーシ in New York. ブランクーシ taught photography by made a darkroom from Man Ray in one's atelier and has got absorbed in recording own work in a photograph. In addition, Isamu Noguchi found directionality to the carrier as the abstract sculptor by becoming an assistant of ブランクーシ in Paris.

By well-known words, "create like god, command like king, work like slave" leaves "you create it like God and command it like King, and work like a slave".

A portrait was used in 500 lei paper money published from 1991 through 1994.
