The Owatari Bridge (おおわたりばし) was chosen as 100 Japan Bridge at a bridge built over Tonegawa in the Gunma prefectural road 6 Maebashi Misato line of Maebashi-shi, Gunma. Today's bridge is the third generation, and there is a green tract of land on monument inscribed with a poem of Sakutaro Hagiwara, the right bank side on the left bank side.

History

In the Edo era, the bridge was not built over Tonegawa for Edo defense and must cross it in the place with the guard station to cross the river, and there was "handing over of the large ferry" in the down stream of the current Owatari Bridge. Earnest wish of the bridging grows in 1858, and a bridge (122m in length bascule bridge) was built in paid many years, but is washed away in 1863. After a Funahashi and tree bridge was built in the Meiji era, Tone Bridge of the modern bridge was built downstream. The Owatari Bridge who became the first generation (1921) in 1921 (504m in length three steel music string truss bridge) was built, and Sakutaro Hagiwara did it with a subject in "native district longing for home poetry". After I was changed in (1943) in 1943, it became today's bridge (1988) in 1988.
