Development and production
In the 1920s, I developed ヴィッカース medium tank Mk.I, Mk.II where had high mobility for those days, and the British army was equipped. As the succession, medium tank Mk.III and A6 (16 tons of tanks) were developed, but these were blasts of the world financial crisis, and the adoption was shelved.
A9 was planned as the proximity support vehicle which assisted medium tank Mk.III and A6 at first in early 1934, but it was the succession vehicle of the favorite as a medium tank of the cheap editions for them after adoption of Mk.III and A6 was shelved. The deployment of 3.7 inches of howitzers was planned for a proximity support vehicle, but, in November, 1934, 2 pounds (40mm) of latest tank gun deployment was decided as a main tank. But the support type of 3.7 inches of howitzer deployment runs side by side, too, and a few will be made.
It was cheap, and, in A9, an existing commercial model would be used in the engine light weight in comparison with medium tank Mk.III which preceded this. It intended to be equipped with Rolls-Royce Ltd. "phantom II" engine (120HP) at first in ヴィッカース, but I was changed to AEC engine (150HP) used for a double decker of London because weight increased from approximately 10 tons to higher than 12 tons during development.
The prototype was completed in the spring of 1936, but this vehicle had some epoch-making characteristics for those days. The body had a resistant high bottom of a ship-shaped base for the explosion of the mine, and similarly I applied the technique of the power emplacement for the bomber which ヴィッカース Corporation dealt with, and the gun turret comprised the world's first power turning device. But this turning device was an oil pressure type, and the British tank in the back was checked in a safer electric expression.
The suspension was called a ヴィッカース "slow motion" type, and was a reinforcement type of the thing used for a series of ヴィッカース whippet tank, the subsidiary of which Sir John Carden of the developer dealt with before this carrier. Three bogeys that was one set of two of them became one set in the series of whippet tank, and, with one large size King Chakravarti of 24 inches and a unique style that two King Chakravarti of 19.5 inches of the narrow path became the group more, this bogey was attached to two sets of one side. This form was used by the later development form Valentine foot soldier tank.
On the other hand, some technical problems were pointed out, too. It is the defect of the brake drum, pitching of the suspension, easy falling off of 履帯. These were improved by start of production to some extent, but some were left without being settled. In addition, in addition to the main gun turret, a gun tower of the ヴィッカース .303 machine gun equipment was equipped with in cockpit right and left of the car's nose one by one by an earnest claim of developer Sir John Carden, but, as for the crew, as for six and the most livability, was limited aggravation to the turning of the gun tower for 給弾 belt again because I located a rifleman of the election on the originally small-sized body each.
I gave decision that light armor divided the main force and the medium tank that it was into two kinds of a cruise tank of the high speed, the foot soldier tank of 重装甲, the low speed in the British army in 1936 when development of A9 was pushed forward and developed it in this way. Based on this new policy, A9 would be classified in a cruise tank and was adopted a regulation as cruise tank Mk.I. But this was because A9 was merely light armor to the last, and, as for the "slow motion" suspension mentioned above, the stability was unsuitable for was high, only, running it at high speed, and the engine was powerless, too. Therefore, A13 (later cruise tank Mk.III) made from an American Christie type tank as a "real" cruise tank will be developed newly while I adopt A9.
In 1937, in cruise tank Mk.I, 125 輌 was placed an order for, and 50 輌 was ヴィッカース company, and 75 輌 was produced in Harland and wolf company. Few was assembled as proximity support (Close Support) model of 3.7 inches of howitzer deployment, Mk.I CS.
Military service
Cruise tank Mk.I was deployed in the first armored division of the dispatch forces in France and fought until Dunkerque withdrawal by a fight of 1940 of France. In addition, I was deployed in the seventh armored division dispatched in the North Africa and was used until the end of 1941.
