Kind of the crab that the sand crab (sand crab, scientific name Ocypode stimpsoni) is classified in tenth piece (prawns eyes) sand crab department. It is a medium-sized crab inhabiting the sandy beach Coast of the East Asia.

Characteristic

The former width is approximately 3cm, and the former does the rectangle that it grew on the back side a little. The scissors leg has a big right and left either, and granule lines line up inside of scissors of the big one. The gnathoped is solid for a long time. The compound eyes are big and when they enter the den, they knock down an optic stalk (pattern to have eyes) and store it in orbital (horizontal hollow of eyes). According to the big compound eyes, it has good eyesight.

When an enemy is not in the neighborhood, non-compound eyes is all in red, but the color of the body of the mature form becomes yellowish-brown - blackish brown when frightened. Thus, mostly it is blackish when I captured it. In addition, the young individual is a monochrome spotted design similar to the rice luck queen crab, but the former is flat, and a leg can be distinguished the purple of the ventral being light for a long time by already running fast from this time.

Habits

It is from the Tohoku district and to the south in Japan and is distributed over the tropical zone, temperate zone area of the East Asia widely to Korean Peninsula, Chinese east bank, Taiwan any place other than Japan. Specific epithet "stimpsoni" of the scientific name is 献名 in connection with zoologist William スティンプソン of the United States of America which left an achievement for an invertebrate study of the northwest Pacific.

I inhabit the beautiful sandy beach of the water and dig the deep den approximately number 10cm - 1m near a seamark. If a circular hole approximately 2-3cm is it in a diameter to height as the tide does not rise, it is sand crab or is very likely to be the den of the congener. The feature is that I dig the big den at the position that is higher than a rice luck queen crab. The people of the den pile up the sand which I dug thinly, and "the sand dumpling" which is bigger than that of rice luck queen crab, and is distorted is seen. In addition, in around the abandoned den, sand dries, but can distinguish it because sand gets wet in around the den where a master is.

I wander around the sandy beach at night and eat the body or the alga of the animal. In addition, I prey on the small animal inhabiting the sandy beach and may prey on the child of the sea turtle which just hatched.

The wariness is not so strong, but wariness is very strong, and lunch escapes into a den quickly at night when I find a big moving thing. Even if it is number 10m distant when a human being approaches the den, I escape into a den and at first do not come out while I hear a sound when I escape into a den once. The far-off cases run away on the run to a den, but the speed to run can run at full speed in the sandy beach at speed of human going at a trot at the brachyuran top-class and handles the sudden turns. I go into the sand quickly within several seconds when I come over to wet sand by the waviness.

Because it is fast-moving, and the den is deep, the capture is difficult, but I put the stem of the long rush and dry sand in a den and dig it up or can capture it in the place that drives it to the beach, and went into the sand.

I can look at the den at beaches, but a habitat is in the tendency to decrease by marine pollution and the decrease of the sandy beach.
