Parent language

Parent language

A schematic view (past the top) of the language divergence. 15 is parent language of the whole this figure, but, for example, 7 is "parent language of 5 and 9", too.
In addition, 6 and 20 are called 15 daughter languages.

The parent language (chip) is the common ancestor language for languages (a family of languages or the subset) to have an ancestor of the common historical linguistics.

It is one language when there is it when I sail up the related language historically each other, but says the language with parent language Proto-language. When it is called an original language, I am seen slightly, but am often called parent language to perform the distinction that is proto-language whether it is source-language.

For example, as for the parent language of the India Europe family of languages (Indo-European languages), the parent language of the language to belong is called "German parent language" by the Germanic of the India Europe family of languages "Proto-Indo-European language".

Because documents are left for no language about the parent language, there is only the theoretical rebuilding, but the examples which the language that parent language is extremely near remains like Latin (Popular Latin) in the Romanesque, Sanskrit in the Indic appear in Indo-European languages.

When it was some kind of speech community, the parent language is imagined, but there is not the guarantee that was a single language. For example, when it was the dialect that is different at the stage of the Proto-Indo-European language, centum language group and the サテム group of a language family of Indo-European languages are imagined, but a single dialect less knows these whether you sail it up.

When I am estimated not the documents that a certain word exists in the process of these studies and a thing gathered in an oral investigation by comparative linguistics, I touch a "*" mark and, for example, write it with "*kʷʰ". I call this estimated form.
